Alleged Cyber Predator Faces 46 New Charges
Tewksbury man allegedly used multiple aliases to coerce young girls to send him nude photos; blackmailed some into sex, prosecutors say.
A Tewksbury man who allegedly blackmailed a Medford teen into have sex with him faces 46 new charges stemming from coercing underage girls into sending nude photos, and in some cases blackmailing them into having sex with him, prosecutors said.
Thomas Hutchinson, 19, originally faced eight charges after he allegedly used multiple aliases through a social networking site to convince a 15-year-old Medford girl to send him nude photos, then threatening to distribute the photos unless the she had sex with him, prosecutors said. He was turned himself in to Medford Police last July.
Hutchinson faces the new charges after investigators scoured his computer files, discovering a trove of nude images of young girls, along with online chats and logs of converstations over Skype, according to the press release.
A Middlesex County Grand Jury indicted Hutchinson on the new charges today, which include rape, and multiple counts of attempted extortion, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, and posing a child in a state of sexual conduct, according to a press release from District Attorney Gerry Leone.
Hutchinson allegedly recorded some of the girls posing nude via webcam without their knowledge, prosecutors said, and on multiple occassions, Hutchinson used nude images of the victims to blackmail, then set up a meeting where he had sex with them, prosecutors said.
In the Medford case, Hutchinson connected with the victim through the website MyYearbook.com, an online dating and social networking site, according to prosecutors.
First, the victim met someone on the site named "Brittney," who offered to connect her to someone in the modeling industry.
Hutchinson then sent messages to the victim from the email address Sexybeast5655@aim.com, claiming to be in the modeling industry and at first asked her to him photos of her in a bathing suit and clothes, prosecutors said. Hutchinson allegedly eventually coaxed the victim to send him naked pictures and videos.
He then threatened to post the videos and images online if the victim didn't have sex with a "friend" of his, prosecutors said. He told her if she didn't agree to have sex with his friend, he would rape her, prosecutors said.
Hutchinson allegedly used a third handle, Tommy364587@aim.com, to arrange to meet the victim. He picked her up at her Medford home and allegedly forced her to perform a sex act on him in his car.
Prosecutors said Hutchinson used similar tactics on other victims.
“We commend these victims for coming forward and revealing the extent of the defendant’s scheme," Leone said in a written statement. "We continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute serious crimes committed by offenders that target vulnerable children through the internet, as we allege is the case here.”
The new charges against Hutchinson include: Rape, attempted extortion (3 counts), indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 (2 counts), indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, posing a child in a state of sexual conduct (9 counts), posing a child in a state of nudity (9 counts), possession of child pornography (15 counts), dissemination of visual matter of a child in sexual conduct (3 counts), dissemination of visual matter of a child in a state of nudity, and dissemination of matter harmful to a minor (2 counts).
He is scheduled to be arraigned April 6 in Middlesex County Superior Court in Woburn.
