Carroll's Plans Return to Medford

Carroll's, a new restaurant and bar planned for 21 Main St., is in the licensing process.

A Medford classic has plans to be re-born.

Carroll's was once a diner on Main Street, just south of Medford Square. Now there are plans for a new Carroll's at 21 Main St.

The family-owned and operated business is in the early stages of demolition work inside the new location, where Il Faro restaurant once was, and hopes to open before Christmas, Owner Maury Carroll said.

"We think it will be something special," Carroll said. "We know the Square is getting rejuvenated and we’re pleased to be a piece of the puzzle."

The restaurant and bar will be open for lunch, dinner and late-night eats, featuring a menu with "some interesting items," Carroll said. The city council on Tuesday will consider a request to allow the restaurant to remain open until 1 a.m.

The original Carroll's, located at 101 Main St., was opened in the 1930s by Carroll's grandfather, also named Maury. Maury's brother, Tom, and his son, also Maury, will be involved in the new establishment, he said. The original closed in 1986.

“We've been in the hospitality business all our lives," Carroll said. "We know what it’s all about."

The Carroll's had plans to open a new restaurant at 55 High St. in 2008, but it didn't work out, Maury Carroll said.

"Unfortunately, we got half way through and the financing fell through and we had to walk away," Carroll said. "That space is now Salvatore's, and they've got a great restaurant going."

Things came together quickly at the 21 Main St. location after Il Faro was seized by the Department of Revenue in May.

“This came together very unexpectedly," Carroll said. "We were looking at another spot and this came along."

Carroll's in Medford and Walsh's in Wakefield, both great spots for the somewhat sobering "western " and coffee after an energetic Saturday night of sampling the locals. Of course no drinking in Melrose at all back then, just at the VFW, Elks and KofC.

How exciting to have something like that coming back, and it sounds like it will be fairly large.
I'm curious if they've had a restaurant open since then, if they have one people can go check out now as a preview? I'm curious to learn more about the establishment and I figure seeing an existing one under this owner would be the best way! Do people have photos of the old Carrolls that they can post? You can add them to the article yourself...

Yea! My high school class had an event at Carroll's. So long ago. I'm not in Medford anymore but I will definitely visit Carroll's just for memories sake. It's a taste of home and a great memory.

You should go there and see if you can find the table. That would be pretty funny if it's there.

When I drove through Medford Square this morning I saw a few people inside doing some demo work. Looks like they're moving this along very quickly.

Am I right in believing there is a City Council Meeting to talk about Carroll's tonight? Anyone know what the topics of conversation will be regarding Carroll's?

The restaurant is appearing before the council to request a special permit for extended hours of operation (until 1 a.m., two hours later than permitted by the zoning law).
