Energy Company Looking into Complaints of Door-to-Door Reps

Just Energy is internally investigating complaints of pushy salespeople.

An energy company is internally investigating complaints of unlicensed door-to-door salespeople after city officals received numerous complaints, according to a company spokesperson.

Many Medford residents have recently received a visit from representatives of Just Energy, a natural gas and electricity company, even though the city has not issued any peddlers licenses to the company, City Councilor Robert Penta said during Tuesday's city council meeting.

Penta said he decided to raise the issue in the city council meeting after he received dozens of complaints from residents last week who told him the company's representatives weren't polite and seemed suspicious.

"I have no idea who they are and what they’re all about, but their introduction to the city is not too promising," Penta said during Tuesday's city council meeting.

Grethen Fuhr, a spokesperson for the energy company, told the council Just Energy has policies and training that calls for its salespeople to obtain proper city licensing and conduct themselves professionally. Just Energy has begun an internal review since learning of the complaints, she said.

"We take these matters very seriously," Fuhr said Tuesday.

City Clerk Ed Finn said he spoke with officials from Just Energy this week about the necessary licensing to go door-to-door in Medford, but no peddlers licenses had been issued to the company as of Tuesday.

According to its website, Just Energy is an Ontario-based company that provides natural gas and electricity to about 1.8 million customers in 13 states and six Canadian providences.
