How Would You Rate Medford’s Plowing During the Blizzard of 2013?

Are you satisfied or frustrated with how the town handled the area’s 5th largest snowstorm in history? Let us know by posting a comment below.

Now that the snow has fallen, and started to melt, it’s your time to rate how the town’s plows handled the more than 2 feet of snow that fell Friday and Saturday.

Medford Patch's Facebook page has lit up since last Saturday with readers who were mostly dissatisfied with plowing in Medford, but we want to open this up to people with opinions any which way.

Feel free to give praise or thanks, express frustrations or offer up constructive criticism in the comments below, and keep in mind, the blizzard was the 5th largest snowstorm in New England history.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the worst, I would give the blizzard plowing in Medford a 9. I understand that it was an enormous storm and that it is a LOT of work. I work at a college and have coworkers and friends who worked ALL weekend never once getting to go home in order to do the snow removal. I know it is a HUGE task. HOWEVER, the governor's travel ban helped facilitate and cleared the roads and yet some streets still weren't plowed as of Sunday night. What is there was an emergency and a fire truck couldn't get down the street? My own street was "plowed" Saturday afternoon. By that I mean the plow came down once and basically pushed the snow around. The street was not driveable. Two plows came down later that day with their blades UP and therefore didn't plow at all. Not sure what the point of that was. I have a friend who is brand new to living in Medford and didn't get plowed until 11pm on Saturday night. OK, fine, HOWEVER - he called DPW, no answer. He called the police and said they didn't seem to care. He called the FIRE DEPT and the phone was picked up and immediately hung up. What if there was a fire? I am super interested to know how many hours these plows got paid for and how much because I am willing to bet that it is not justified based on the complaints I've heard from around the city. Also, the banks on the corners are way too high and super dangerous for traffic and not being able to see oncoming cars or god forbid children or other pedestrians.

I live on Fellsway West and every time the plows come by (even though there are NO houses on the other side) they turn their blades toward my driveway and essentially plow us in. Shoveling a 10ft mound at the end of a driveway when it could be easily avoided by changing the direction of a blade is frustrating.

I live in West Medford. This was the worst plowing job I have ever seen. Some streets in my area were not plowed, all were only partially plowed. The day after the storm was sunny and nice, a good day for crews to be out, but not a plow to be seen. People in my neighborhood did a street themselves. It really was pathetic, and to think that our taxes are going up $125 dollars. The schools should have opened Monday, if the city had done its' job.

The city plowing was a disgrace. Not a plow in our are for days. We also shoveled our own paths. The mayor needs to call out the head of the DPW. When they did plow they didn't make multiple runs. We pay taxes for this.

I have more of an issue with the lack of shoveling on the sidewalks. It's been a total nightmare for pedestrians, and especially dangerous for children/elderly. I've helped several people climb over mounds of snow to get to the next section of shoveled path. I'd like to see some actual ticketing of people that don't shovel their walkways. People that only shovel a path to their driveways really tick me off. As for the plowing, not great on the side streets, but they did a MUCH better job than Somerville/Cambridge.

I agree...am shocked at the number of houses on Lawernce Road and on Forest Street, the police dept should issues tickets to homeowners who don't shovel.

Tell me, they say we are in the red for funding, but no plows were in my area. Where is last years budget money since we had no snow.

Never saw a plow on Brookings Street until 6PM on Saturday. The plow came down the street and couldn't handle all the snow so he picked up his blade and just left all the snow in the middle of the street. Then a few hours later a City of Medford plow came up the street and tried to move the snow pile that was left in the middle of the street by the previous plow - he was unable to move the snow so he put his truck in reverse and back down the street and left - never to see another plow. The residents of the street were left to fend for themselves. Great job City of Medford - NOT!!!

I can tell you that a small army of Bobcats invaded Medford Square at midnight Sunday night and beeped incessantly, like frogs in a Southern swamp, until at least 4:00 a.m. Monday. What they actually accomplished I couldn’t say because I still had to walk in the street Monday morning on the way to the bus stop. Ironically, the one Bobcat still at work at 8:00 a.m., a time when many people are headed to work, was NOT making the warming beep.

Butler St was not plowed from 11pm Fri until 1am SUNDAY - NOT OK! We called and were told the plow broke, then that a neighbor put snow in the street resulting in us being last on the list (nobody was outside until 10am Sat and at that time it had been 11 hours since a plow came bye).. CRAP! We were told the city was "trying to get up here" do I have the luxury to "try to pay taxes" NO! I have two neighbors that are 80+ yrs old and 5 that are over 65... when the street was plowed it was one straight sweet! In calling the highway Dept I was told "we only have to plow enough to get a car through" ok well hopefully none of my elderly neighbors need an ambulance during a storm at all... They are lucky we have 5 snow blowers for the dozen houses and all of us "young people" helped our neighbors! Had we sat bye and watched our neighbors shovel the City of Medford may have had less residents! I am beyond appalled!!!
