MAP: Help Us Identify Medford's Problem Crosswalks

Help us pinpoint some of the most dangerous crosswalks in Medford.

Crosswalks and pedestrian safety have become a hot-button issue in Medford over the last few months.

It's been a topic of conversation at several recent City Council meetings, with Councilor Michael Marks being the most vocal about possibly changing how Medford handles its crosswalks.

Marks suggested possible implementing raised crosswalks like those that exist in nearby communities like Somerville and Cambridge.

Have you identified a place in the city where pedestrians tend to dart out into the street without using a crosswalk?

Write the street name where you saw the problem in the comments section below and we will add a pin to the interactive map above.

Let's see if we can help pinpoint some problem areas.

The 93 on and off ramps at the Salem St. rotary are not very clearly marked, and can be a nightmare to be noticed by traffic accelerating on to the highway or trying to pay attention to merging. They were temporarily painted halfway during construction, then the other half was painted while the first half remains worn; meanwhile there should be more obvious crossing signs. This is a major link between medford square and the east half of the city and has a large amount of pedestrian traffic. PS these walkways are also completely ignored when it snows! It is very easy to slide down the snowbanks into traffic.

Winthrop and Playstead as well as Winford Way and Winthrop are VERY difficult for pedestrians. Cars do not stop for pedestrians and also greatly exceed the speed limit for Winthrop Street adding to the danger for pedestrians.

Playstead to Winthrop is awful, right by the cemetery. The ones at the Boston Ave rt 16 intersection is really dangerous because people often run the light! No one stops! In all honesty, there is not a good crosswalk in the city.

Trying to cross the crosswalk on Riverside Avenue after the Spring Street lights.
Even though one is in the crosswalk awaiting traffic to stop, most of the time, no one stops. One has to wait untill traffic dies down in order to get to the other side. Same thing with Locust Street where Shaws supermarket is.

Riverside Avenue and Bradbury Avenue: many speeders throughout the day and night.

The crosswalk on Riverside ave and Commercial street is a real danger. I cross this on almost a daily basis and even if the walk signal is on they still come at you. Even worse right now since the snow, we can't even get onto the sidewalk or the crosswalk because it is not cleared forcing us into the street!!

High Street rotaries -- both at Mystic Valley Parkway (Arlington Line) and at Winthrop Street. The entirety of Wellington Circle where pedestrian signals are non-existent.

The City of Medford has a newly formed Walking Routes Taskforce that is working to address pedestrian issues in Medford. The goal is to encourage people in Medford to engage in more 'everyday walking.' We are currently working with the Columbus and Brooks Schools to implement "Safe Routes to Schools" programming as well as plotting out and signing a walking route similar to the River Routes in Malden and Somerville. If you would like to get involved please contact me (Syrah McGivern) at the Board of Health 781-393-2560 / smcgivern@medford.org

1. The traffic circle at Winthrop and High Streets, as someone mentioned already. It's on the MassDOT "most notorious" list for the number of accidents that happen there.

2. South Street, Main Street, Route 16 intersection, yes the one right next to the police station. Nearly impossible to navigate on foot or in a vehicle.

3. Winthrop and George Streets. Drivers come barrelling down the hill from Tufts.

Actually MassDOT's worst intersection in Medford is route 16 and Winthrop Street, not up the hill at the rotary. http://services.massdot.state.ma.us/maptemplate/TopCrashLocations/

personally, I'm not a big fan of the intersection where route 16 E and the onramp for 93 criss cross, right alongside the old DPW building. There is no yield sign on either road there; you just have to gun it, look over your shoulder and hope for the best. also, as a frequently walker across the winthrop rotary, I am grateful for the drivers who pay attention there, both of you.

Over a year ago the Medford Patch reported on the problem intersection at George and Winthrop Streets, where both an MBTA and a school bus stop are located.

Since then our neighborhood group "Team George & Winthrop" has been making steady progress towards improving this area, thanks in large part to a traffic study paid for by Tufts at the Mayor's request.

April 2013 is when Mayor McGlynn has committed to implementing a raised crosswalk at the Wesley United Methodist Church in order to slow traffic coming down the hill from Tufts.

My dad was killed, hit by a pickup truck, while crossing the street in the crosswalk on Governors Avenue at the intersection of Lawrence Road, right next to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. There have always been accidents there, and I am not sure of the fatality rate. But I am sure that you can ask the school crossing guards that watch the intersections for students.
