Markey Responds to Newtown Massacre, Urges Stricter Gun Controls
Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), dean of the New England Congressional delegation, issued the following statement after the fatal school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
Congressman Ed Markey released this statement after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT:
“Today’s news of the horrific school shooting of students, teachers and staff is shocking and horrifying, and my deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives today in such a senseless and tragic event. As we learn more about the situation at Sandy Hook Elementary School, we remember how precious life is and how we at our best when we come together as a nation to support each other in our time of grief. Our collective heart breaks as we consider the family members who are being given the worst news imaginable, and we turn our thoughts and prayers to all of the people of Newtown affected today in the hopes for a full and speedy recovery.
“How many more innocent people have to die senseless deaths until we enact stricter rules that address unfettered access to guns? Thirty-four people are killed with guns every day in America. It past time for a national debate on gun control and solutions to ensure that this terrible trend in mass shootings finally comes to an end.”

Gun control is not the issue. Congressman Markey, how many of those 34 people killed daily by guns are killed at the hands legal gun owners? Gun control only affects the law abiding citizens who own firearms. This horrific act of violence was caused by a mentally ill person who fell through the cracks in the system, and NOT by a lack of gun control. Why not put more government funding into recognizing and treating mental illnesses? Adam Lanza's goal that day was not to shoot children, but to kill children. On the very same day as this tragedy, a 36-year-old man attacked 22 children with a knife at a school in China. Private citizens in China aren't even allowed to own guns. Does anybody think that politicians in China are going to start talking about knife contol laws? Then when someone is beaten with a baseball bat they will start talking about baseball bat reform? The weapon of choice is not the problem, it is the lack of funding out there to treat the mentally ill.

I don't know what the problem is with having gun control. If you don't have a mental illness you will have a permit. I do agree that the magazine clips should be made smaller.
