Medford Native Hal McKusick Dead at 87

McKusick was a member of the CBS orchestra.

Jazz teacher Hal McKusick died Wednesday after a prolonged illness, officials at the New York school he taught at said Thursday.

Born June 1, 1924, in Medford, Mass., McKusick was an acclaimed saxophonist who was a member of the CBS Studio Orchestra and performed with many jazz legends during his long and distinguished career.

McKusick was a teacher at the Ross School in Sag Harbor, New York.

"Hal was an incredible and renowned musician, artist and teacher and will be missed by many, both within and outside Ross School," said the Ross Head of School Michele Claeys. "Our thoughts are with Hal's family and all those who were fortunate enough to know and work with him. I have so many fond memories of Hal, as a charming colleague and neighbor, an enchanting performer, and a loyal friend."

McKusick also took up woodworking and restored his historic Sag Harbor home himself.
