Medford on Charter School Shortlist
A new charter school to serve Medford could receive state funding.
The state has asked a dozen groups with proposals for new charter schools for more information -- including one that would serve Medford.
A total of 22 groups submitted proposals for new charter schools programs in Massachusetts, and the Department of Education has asked 12 of those groups to submit full applications, according to an announcement made last week.
Among the applicants is the Pioneer Charter School of Science, a pre-exisiting charter school in Everett looking to create an expanded network of charter schools. The proposal, called "Pioneer Charter School of Science IV," would serve Woburn, Stoneham, Medford, Melrose, Wakefield and Saugus, according to the announcement. It is unknown where the school would be located.
Under the proposal, the school would serve grades 7 to 12 and have a total enrollment of 360. A full application is due by Nov. 14; they will be review by the Department of Education and public hearings will be held, according to the announcement. New charters will be awarded in February 2013.
