Medford Patch Readers Sound Off on Walmart

Opinions are wide and varied on this polarizing topic.

We expected some heavy debate when we posted this article Monday asking Medford Patch readers if a Walmart is something they want to see in the city.

With over 30 comments on our Facebook page and another half dozen on the article itself, the debate we envisioned certainly came true.

Not surprisingly, this is a polarizing topic among readers of Medford Patch. Some believe it would be a great idea and if it is brought to the Meadow Glen Mall as has been speculated, it could revitalize the shopping center.

But many others worry about the impact on smaller local businesses.

Here is a sampling of the opinions shared by our readers:

Sarah Beardslee: "I wouldn't set one foot in there, even if it was the last store in existence! They treat their employees as second rate citizens, at best."

Joanna: "Yes Yes yes I like Walmart and find it difficult to get to most stores... I say a resounding YES."

Josh Wardell: "Absolutely not. Brings in trash, drives out the good businesses."

Doria Pizzotti Alberg: "It would be an economical plus for the city, on the downside, more traffic in an already congested area. My biggest gripe with Walmart is the glass ceiling for women and how they don't pay women the same as men, and they overall treat their employees like cattle. I don't shop their now, I wouldn't shop their if they put it in Medford."

Lisa Edmunds Frazer: "Super Walmart would be terrific. Closest Walmart is North Reading, unless you're willing to actually go to the one in Lynn (not)."

Joe Salerno: "Terrible idea! Every small business in the city would close down."

Amy Mullaly Prestigiovanni: "Would love it!!!!!!!!!!!"

Peter Brady: "No thank you, I think we have enough stores/malls in this area already."

Ella Baglio Vellucci Paula: "would love a walmart in meadow glen mall yes indeed"

I love the small businesses at the mall, but can clearly feel that something needs to change for its sustainability, Wal Mart would not have been my choice.

There are no positives of having a WalMart in our community. Nor would I wish it's devastation on any town.

KohlS Is Enough Of A Super Store For One Small Mall To Handle. Walmart Is A Mistake To Even Consider. The Mall Should Get Back Some Of Its Previous Type businesses And Add Small Movie Theater.
