POLL: Build a New Parking Garage on Governors Avenue?

What do you think about the proposed garage?

A proposed parking garage on Governors Avenue could receive a $2 million grant from the state, but not everyone on the city council is on board.

Three city councilors have voiced opposition to building the garage, which would include about 200 parking spots and come with a price tag in the neighborhood of $7.5 million, before the grant.

Mayor Michael McGlynn has said businesses need the garage, but some city councilors want to see parking enforcement in Medford Square first, and question whether the garage is even necessary.

Previous studies have shown that Medford Square has enough parking spaces to meet demand. What would help greatly is to manage the existing parking more effectively through pricing, time-based restrictions, and enforcement. If those strategies alone do not sufficiently solve the problems, only then should the great expense of a garage be pursued.

There are many more important issues that need to be addressed before another garage is built. We need a new police and fire station, and a new DPW facility. Look at Somerville for guidance re. parking. That city has had 2 mayors who actually cared about the best interests of it's citizens, unlike ours.

Things seem to be fine without the garage. Use the money to cut city taxes for the people
