Stoneham Man Faces Drunk Driving Charges Following High-Speed Chase in Medford

John Farias, 48, was slated for arraignment in Woburn District Court Monday morning.

A Stoneham man is facing drunk driving charges and other motor vehicle violations after leading police on a high-speed chase in Medford Saturday night, according to a State Police press statement.

John Farias, 48, of Stoneham, was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor, failing to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and several other motor vehicle violations, according to the statement.

Farias' bail was set at $190, and he was expected to be arraigned in Woburn District Court Monday morning, according to the statement.

At 6:46 p.m. April 21, State Trooper Peter Stanley attempted to stop a speeding BMW on Route 93 northbound in Medford, according to the statement.

"Stanley attempted to stop the speeding vehicle using his emergency lights and siren but the vehicle continued on, sped up and began to weave in and out of traffic in an attempt to flee from the attempted stop," reads the statement. "The BMW exited off of the highway and into Medford where Trooper Stanley determined the roads were too heavily populated to safely pursue the vehicle and terminated the pursuit."

The BMW was then located a short time later by another State Police cruiser and stopped in Stoneham, according to the statement. Farias was reportedly driving the BMW.

"Farias was observed to have a heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, unsteady on his feet and had bloodshot, glassy eyes," according to the statement. "Farias was (allegedly) uncooperative with troopers and was taken into custody."
