Tenoch Mexican Restaurant Now Open in Medford Square
New taqueria opened on Riverside Avenue last week.
The word authentic is thrown around a lot in the restaurant industy, but Alvaro Sandoval insists his new Medford Square taqueria is the real deal.
Tenoch opened at 24 Riverside Avenue last week.
"From the owner to the kitchen, we're all from Mexico," Sandoval, a native of Veracruz, Mexico, said Tuesday. "And the food is authentic. At the end of the day, we all eat it."
The new take-out place is a family affair, with Sandoval's siblings Andres and Elia and brother-in-law Alex Molina all involved. Elia and Alex are the owners of Cielito Lindo in Beverly.
Tenoch's menu features items expected for a taqueria, like burritos, tacos and quesadillas. But there are also some unique options. Its Tenoch Torta - a sandwich served on oval-shaped bread with beans, pork, ham, Oaxaca cheese, chipotle mayo, avocado and onions - is already receiving lots of positive feedback, Sandoval said.
"We don't like to call it our signature dish, but it's something unique around here," he said. "It's hard to find a place to get a good torta."
Sandoval moved from Veracruz to Arlington 13 years ago and has worked in the restaurant industry for the last six years. When he decided to open his own place, he chose Medford Square because he thought it could use a new culinary option.
"There's no Mexican place in the Square," Sandoval said. "We thought it needed something different."
The menu will also feature weekly evening specials, and Sandoval said he hopes to add beer and wine soon.
