What is the Worst Intersection in Medford?

Let us know by posting a comment below and we'll put together a recap from your responses.

With so many people hitting the road this week to celebrate the Fourth of July by seeing fireworks or the Boston Tall Ships, for example, it got us thinking: What is the most dangerous intersection in Medford?

Do people ignore signs or speed limits at this intersection? Does it have potholes, poor lighting, signs or lights that don't make sense?

Let us know what intersection you deem to be the least safe in Medford by posting a comment below.

There are several that would qualify for this distinction but none more dangerous than the exit ramp from 93 north/ The fellsway that empties onto Mystic Avenue. Traffic enters from both north and south, the road is in deplorable condition and so drivers must proceed slowly in order to avoid damage while at the same time dodging traffic that crawls out into the intersection. Seems like a timed traffic light would remedy this easily.

Lawrence Road and Governors Ave hands down can't even cross when the crossing lights are on Since when does no turn or red mean don't even stop and just turn on red

How about the intersection at Boston Ave and Route 16 (Mystic Valley parkway), by the U-Haul building? If you have a death wish, try attempting to take a left turn onto Boston Ave from either direction of Rt. 16. It's very risky. Why don't they stagger the lights there? It's a quick and safe fix.

Wellington Circle for sure. It's extremely confusing for motorists despite attempts to mark the lanes clearly. And don't even think about trying to walk or bike through it.

More than once driving through there, an 18-wheeler has plowed through from the left up to 10 seconds after I have a green. I'm only surprised I haven't seen or been in an accident there.

Rotary at 60 and 38 (high school)?
Make it Bigger internal diameter, and all would be better.

End of Boston ave as it hits rte 60 in W. Medford. Light?

Any part of W. medford Rte 60 in the mornings when the ninny crossing guards stop traffic every minute for each kid? maybe wait til there's 5 kids?

Fulton spring and fulton. About 1 in 5 drivers coming down fulton obey the stop sign. All others believe inertia grants them the right of way.

Not great that people don't always do complete stops, but at least it is slowing them down. It was craziness without that stop there, a fatality waiting to happen.....city still needs to add another stop up at Foss to help slow downhill momentum.

Wellington Circle is one, but their are several that qualify. Now if you really want to get people going, lets talk about rotaries, like Roosevelt Circle....

the number of different spots speaks to the very poor police dept in Medford, which reflects on the real chief, the Mayor. The crossing guards on W High are hopeless.

You think the police department is in charge of the traffic/road flow planning and the traffic lights?

I think there are a few..the rotary on route 60...keep an eye on those coming off 93 who think they have the right away coming into the rotary...have almost been hit many times! And people not obeying the stop sign on grant ave and central...have seen many terrible accidents there of people flying down the road.

For me, since I grew up in Wellington, it's not a big deal but the entire intersection at Kappy's is one of the worst if not "the" worst in the states.
Having said this, Park St. and Riverside Ave: trying to come out from Park onto Riverside is a nightmare and the fence on the left side doesn't help to see what's coming that way.
The worst for myself personally: Forest and Webster. Gives me a near heart attack every time trying to go in or out of Webster.

Do you mean Park St and Washington? That's pretty awful and there's a very high fence there.

It depends on how you define "dangerous," and whose information you are using - Operators, Local Police, Other and State Police. The Mass. DOT studies also give more weight to Fatal crashes and crashes with personal injury.

According to the latest figures from the Mass DOT Highway Division (2009) the most dangerous intersection in the city of Medford is Rt.16 (Mystic Valley Parkway) and Winthrop St. which is tied for 120th most dangerous in the state with 53 total crashes.

Main St. & Salem St. is ranked 153rd with 70 total crashes.

Personally, I think Wellington Circle is the most dangerous with all the people jumping lights, the confusing lane configurations and all the new foot traffic from Station Landing. I can't imagine how bad it will be when the Ikea and new MBTA stop opens at Assembly Mall.

Jim,
I concur that the Rt. 16/ Winthrop St. intersection is a bad one. What gets my blood boiling though is when someone tries to take a left onto Winthrop St. from 16, coming from either direction. No amount of blaring horns or epithets from drivers stuck behind the perpertrator making this stupid manuveur seem to solve the problem (and never would anyway). The lack of truly visible (as in larger) and correctly placed signs prohibiting left turns may have something to do with it. The tiny signs now used are totally inadequate for the task.

OK Wellington is annoying and people are always going straight from the turn lanes, but try living by Salem St. (Route 60) and the Fellsway. It's like comparing RI drivers (clueless) to MA drivers (ruthless).

Where the ramp from Route 16/Mystic Valley Pkwy eastbound meets South Street and then intersects with Main Street. Amazing more people aren't killed there. The blinking lights are useless, of course, nobody knows who has the right of way, and a large proportion of the drivers are lost, trying to find their way to Medford center. The traffic patterns through Medford center are ridiculous, but since this is the only way to get there from Arlington or Cambridge without being stuck on High Street for 20 minutes, it's particularly appalling.
And the intersection of Lawrence Ave and Governors Ave isn't necessarily dangerous, but the lights are timed really badly, so that traffic on Lawrence Ave is aways sitting waiting for the non-existent traffic on Governors Ave.
And finally, Roosevelt Circle, coming off of Forest St trying to get to Elm St. Half of the people coming up from 28 or the off-ramp from 93 never learned what the word "Yield" means, and come barreling into the rotary without bothering to look if anyone's about to hit them. Very scary.

I agree the worst intersection is "ramp from Route 16/Mystic Valley Pkwy eastbound meets South Street and then intersects with Main Street" Add in pedestrians on either side and it treacherous to get through.

The one intersection that hasn't been mentioned here is the intersection of Washington St and Spring St. Every day I turn left on Spring (from Myrtle) and an immediate right on Washington, and with the cars on the right parked all the way to the corner, I can't see oncoming cars. Coming back from Medford Square I'll often take Riverside->Park->Magoun instead.

I find it scary to bike through the Route 60 rotary under I-93 at night because there are no street lights! Or if there are, they are burned out or otherwise nonfunctional. Please fix this.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Boston Ave and College Ave near Tufts. Where going straight on Boston Ave and oncoming traffic from College Ave from Powder House Circle both have green lights at the same time.

Brian, if you can believe it, the current configuration is the best one they have ever had at Boston Ave and College Ave and I do agree it is not that great. I worry about the students who are studying while they cross the street totally oblivious to how close they are to meeting their maker!

Jim, Really? They've never just had a simple intersection there? What have they had that was worse than crossing traffic both having green lights at the same time??

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the off-ramp from I-93 southbound onto 16. Traffic turning right onto Harvard Ave has to cross 3 lanes of traffic, with terrible visibility, in about 200 feet. It astonishes me I don't see an accident every time I go through there.

Although my favorite bit of egregiously stupid roadway design in Medford is the slip ramp that splits off the 60-to-93-northbound on-ramp and empties into the ONCOMING LANE of Fountain St. Fortunately that's a low-traffic area.

I had been thinking Rt16 and Main St was the worst until you reminded me of this I-93 exit onto Rt 16... it's been so long since I've taken that exit because I avoid it like the plague. I either take the exit before or the exit after. I can't believe I avoided accidents in past years when I used to take that exit.

Route 60 & 38 rotary closely followed by Wellington. Actually, anything in that entire area is dangerous.

Surprised I haven't seen this one here.... the intersection of Fulton Street and Winslow Ave gets my vote. Since the streets intersect at angles other than perpendicular, It's pretty much of a blind corner coming out of Winslow onto Fulton. Folks come flying up Fulton Street (can anyone remember what to do at a blinking yellow lit? Speed up a think - lol) and have little time to stop for cars, but more importantly, kids (this intersection is also Carr Park). In the morning rush hour, cars take a shortcut from Elm Street, through a couple of small side streets, and then down Fulton well above a safe speed limit. That just exacerbates an already dangerous situation.

For a pedestrian to cross Rte 16 (Mystic Valley Parkway at Rte 28 (the Fellsway) to get to MCDonald Park is an absolutely terrifying experience which, sadly, is why I so rarely go to this park.

Definately the rotary at Winthrop St.,High St. dangerous i almost get hit every time i go thru that rotary, no one stops and everyone thinks they have the right of way but the law says he/she who gets to the rotary first may proceed thru the rotary first and has the right of way, everyone should stop/yield at that rotary to save lives wake up people

Roosevelt Circle/Fellsway W/Fulton St mish-mash. Don't know if it's the most dangerous but it's pretty awful.

Start with Fellsway W between Fulton St and Roosevelt Circle. Crossing light for Fellsway is <20 sec. which is barely time for most adults to cross, never mind kids or the elderly. People are often trapped on the median for multiple cycles or just cross against the light. The worst was seeing a little girl run out thinking she had enough time and winding in front of traffic when the light changed. She was lucky that drivers saw her.

Speed limit on Fellsway after the Fulton light is 30 but most cars go 40-45. This is a short distance in a thickly settled area with crosswalks used by cyclists, kids, runners and other people who'd like to visit the nearby Fells without having to drive.

Continuing to the rotary there are crosswalks where peds have to compete for attention with drivers continuing on 28 or merging onto 93. Guess who loses? In spite of new crossing signs put up by DOT I still see people waiting and waiting to cross, especially during evening rush hour.

From a driver's perspective the rotary contains a lot of data to process in a short time. A two-lane rotary with a bus stop, exits to 93, 28, S Border and Forest plus crosswalks is a lot to take in and still drive safely.
Suggestions? More lights less lanes, both on the rotary and Fellsway. Subtract a lane and convert it to bus/bike. Make crossing over to the Fells safer for peds and for cyclists.
