Hawks very comfortable in the wild of urban Medford

We have a few Red Tail Hawks who regularly feed on the rodents and small birds near Main Street.  They often hang out on the edge of a roof and can be seen aloft, circling the neighborhood.  Yesterday morning, we were greeted by the sight of a fearless hawk perched on a balcony railing.  The hawk appeared to be looking for his prey while enjoying the Christmas lights and decorations.  The hawk may have been attracted to the fresh Christmas tree standing on the balcony as he was sitting very close to it.
The avian visitor did not flinch when a door was opened, nor when humans moved to within five feet of him.  He ignored the onlookers, who were gawking from behind a storm door, as they marveled at his size and heft.  The hawk hung out for about five minutes, then took off in search of prey. What a beautiful creature!
