Vote for Neil Osborne to Make History in Medford

Today, Neil and Maria Scott Osborne voted to make history in Medford. In 1982, then City Councilor Kenneth Holmes nominated Neil for a testimonial from the council, for Neil's achievements as a Boston Globe All-Scholastic athlete. The council cited Neil for bringing honor to Medford High School, his parents, relatives, friends and the entire citizenry. Holmes was a single-term councilor and the last and possibly only person of color to serve on the council.

No Medford citizen under the age of 30 has ever been represented by other than a Caucasian councilor. This does not call into question the ability of one group to adequetly represent all citizens. However, it does beg the question of role models in leadership positions for our youth. Society bemoans a lack of positive role models for young men of color. There is no substitute for teaching by example.

Neil Osborne immigrated to the USA in 1969, and has been a Medford resident ever since. He was mentored at Medford High School, and achieved a scholarship to UMass Amherst, a fellowship for his Masters Degree there, and attended law school. He has sustained a successful private law practice for 15 years, and is a devoted husband and father. None of this is because he is black. It is because he is man of character and leadership.
