PAWS (Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society) is an all-volunteer, non-profit animal welfare organization serving several communities north of Boston.
Look at me under the Christmas tree! With a name like Sequoia, I think I should have been photographed under my own tree. But, of course, sequoia trees grow mostly in California, and I am definitely a Massachusetts cat. I was found in Reading and rescued by PAWS with the help of a very nice lady who was feeding me. I wish my previous owners had kept me in the house so I would not have gotten lost. But I do consider myself one lucky cat to be spending the holidays inside. The only thing that would make me happier would be to be with a forever family of my own.
As I said, I was found outside with a kitten named Hickory (who is already adopted!). They thought Hickory was my baby, but in fact, when I was spayed last week, they discovered I have never had babies at all. That was lucky for me because I am young (about a year old) and healthy and now I am protected from certain types of cancer, and I’m not going to have any unnecessary litters. I actually don’t like kittens so I am very happy not to be having any. In my opinion, we felines should all be spayed in order to reduce the number of unwanted kittens on the streets. You know that, of course. But be sure to tell your friends to spay and neuter. There are too many other cats who are not as lucky as I am to have been found and taken inside where I can live a long, happy life. Plus, there are lots of low-cost programs, like the Catmobile (www.catmobile.org), to make spay/neuter and vaccinations available to everyone. PAWS can help provide more information if you need it.
OK, I am sounding kind of preachy for such a young cat. So, let me talk about myself instead. I am a beautiful tortoiseshell with a distinct white lock of fur on my chest. I am sweet, gentle and I love people—especially those who will let me sleep with them in their bed. I am also playful and will chase anything that moves in your house. When you don’t have time to play with me, I am happy to look out the window, even though I do not want to be outside anymore. And I am easy to pick up and hold (unlike some cats who get all grumpy and wiggly when you do that). If you want to know more, you’ll just have to come and meet me!
Sequoia trees are said to live for 1000 years. Even with my allotted nine-lives, I think I may not make it that long. But I do plan on many happy and healthy years ahead, and I want to spend those with someone who will be mine forever. I never want to get lost or separated from my human(s) again. I am happy to go to a single person, couple, or family with older children. Since I find most other kitties annoying, I would probably be best as an only cat. So, let’s get together for the holidays. We can hang out under the tree and sniff the evergreens. Does that appeal to you? If so, call PAWS now and arrange to have this Sequoia transplanted into your heart and home.
If you are interested in learning more about Sequoia, contact PAWS at (781) 246-6111 or PAWSwakefield@yahoo.com. You can also meet many of our available cats at our weekly adoption hours: Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at VCA Wakefield Animal Hospital. Our adoption center at the Danvers PetSmart will also be holding its usual adoptions hours this week on Thursday and Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Bring your furry family members to the Danvers PetSmart (104 Andover Street) this weekend for a picture with Santa Claws. He will be at our adoption center on December 15 or 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pet Parents receive one 4x6 photograph in a holiday collector frame for $9.95 (with PetPerks card). For every photo package, PetSmart will donate $5 to PAWS. So it is a great time to get a nice holiday picture and help PAWS animals.
