‘Meffa,’ ‘Medfid,’ ‘Mefid’

How one Patch editor learned the hard way that you never call Medford, 'Meffa.'

On Monday morning, I thought I posted innocently enough on our Facebook page, “Recent arrests in Meffa: http://bit.ly/1e67bL6.”

Boy was I wrong. I quickly learned that you never, ever call Medford, “Meffa.”

Kim Leonard was the first to rightfully point out my error. Julie Hagigeorges added that “Medfid” and “Mefid” are acceptable, but never “Meffa.” Other longtime residents seemed to agree, as her comment got 11 “Likes” (my original post still has zero … ).

Jules Wheeler commented, “Born & raised in Medford, have never said Meffa in my life.” She received 5 “Likes.”

Now, although I am still a newbie, I actually live in West Medford, and doing so, I like to frequent the West Medford Deli where they have a sandwich named the “The Meffa,” which is delicious by the way, breaded chicken, provolone, marinara and prosciutto, but I digress.

So that’s my (poor) excuse. It’ll never happen again.

What’s your take on “Meffa,” “Medfid” and “Mefid”? Are “Medfid” and “Mefid” acceptable? Let us know by posting a comment below.
