What’s with the New ‘Over the Mystic River Route’ Signs?

See what the new signs are all about.

By now, you may have noticed “Over the Mystic River Route” signs popping up near Medford Square.

We even got a question, “Why are the ‘River Route’ signs in neighborhoods not close to the river?”

Well, the answer is the signs mark Medford’s first walking route – set up as part of the Mass in Motion program, as well as the Mass Environmental Trust project, which helps people access the state’s rivers.

The route, mapped out by the city’s Walking Routes Task Force (which anyone is welcome to be a part of), starts in Medford Square and is a 1.7-mile loop that includes the Mystic River and a view of “Grandfather’s house.”

The route goes along: Governor’s Avenue, Lawrence Road, Lincoln Road, Crocker Road, Rural Avenue, Winthrop Street and the Mystic River Path through Condon Shell Park.

Many city departments were involved in the project. The route will officially kick off at the Circle the Square events on Thursday, Aug. 15.
