With Tuesday’s news that the Medford Shaw’s will be closing next month, a number of our readers have said the building should become a Market Basket or a Trader Joe’s.

It appears to be a pretty even split between the two in the comments on our initial post and on our Facebook page. Readers also seemed to agree that the outgoing Shaw’s, at 61 Locust St. across from the Meadow Glen Mall, wasn’t in the best shape.

The Medford Shaw’s has not been profitable for “quite some time,” according to a company statement.

1st Choice: Market Basket. 2nd choice: Trader Joe's. It's the perfect spot with all the apartments there, and then I wouldn't have to drive to Somerville and Cambridge. Keep my business in Medford!

My vote would be for a Market Basket. I go way out of my way to shop at Market Basket -- in Somerville, Chelsea, Woburn, or Burlington. Medford would be a perfect location for a new Market Basket and would serve the community well. Although I love Trader Joe's and shop there often, I think that a Market Basket would be a better fit for Medford.

I think Trader Joe's would be great but would not be opposed to Market Basket either. Chelsea isn't that far and I shop there all the time. Either store would be perfect in that area, especially with all the new condos being built.

Trader Joe's would be great ! Market Basket also is a store I absolutely love.

I would like to see a Market basket in there. If not, how about a Toyota dealership!

A Lowes Hardware store would be great. There are enough Grocery stores already. Besides, if one thinks that the traffic is already bad in the Wellington area [ and it is]. Just think of how much worse it will be with a Market Basket in that Spot on little Locust St, which cannot handle what cuts through there already.

Market basket please please please

Market Basket all the way.

The employees were great at Shaws, but the pricing was deceptive. They'd have a sign on the item for one price, but on the shelves were a similar item without a price, you get to the checkout line and it was more money. This happened repeatedly at both Stoneham (now out of business) and Medford. In Stoneham they threw out so much good food every night it was a sin. Poor management on the local level when the competition is high. Especially Stoneham at Redstone Plaza where you have Market Basket and Stop & Shop down the road in Woburn and up the road in Wakefield.

Definitely Market Basket. I need an affordable food store that is on a bus line. I'm sure many others have the same needs.

I would love to see a Market Basket there, price's are so reasonable, people are struggling as it is.We have more than enough Whole foods, and Stop and Shops everywhere.Trader Joes is great for certain items, but you really can't do a weekly full shopping there. Please, give the Medford residents what we ask for once in awhile.

Bring back Transamerica Trucking. I have a photo of the Shaws site when it was Transamerica that I snapped back in 69'. It was a different world back then. You could actually drive on Locust St without all the bumps. (Johnny Byers' uncle was close with our family and had his business, Cardee Test Boring, across the street; I was the personal golf caddy for Johnny's uncle and my dad when they won the Calcutta golf tournament back in 1969.)

Market Basket for sure!

Market Basket!

Ok A bunch of people have chimed in- seems like everyone wants a Market Basket. My question is, where is this information going? Is it reported to anyone in particular or are we all just voicing our opinions into a vortex? Are we doomed to getting a Walmart?
Ruby January 29, 2014 at 11:45 AM
I believe, now that the Wellington plaza has been purchased from an out of state firm, who is supposedly up-grading the plot into mixed Condo- Apartments and upper scale businesses it is highly unlikely that the City will allow a Market basket to go in there. Probably more Condo- apts. Sad to say.
Ruby January 29, 2014 at 11:51 AM
Oh and to reply to Alexa's post. You are correct, these posts are just wishful thinking, as the City has no doubt already got something in mind to go there. They always say they listen at public forums , but it is the one who offers the City the biggest payback, Such as; they will ask whom ever wants to go in there to improve some of the local parks or pave some of the city streets in return for a favorable vote.
Jeff Megargell January 29, 2014 at 01:42 PM
Either one! Both would be highly welcomed into the area.....even a Whole Foods.
Elise Collins January 29, 2014 at 04:48 PM
I heard, and can NOT say 100%, that with the mall closing Shaws will become Kohls and the mall will become Walmart. Don't know how accurate the information is.
Angelo LiCausi January 29, 2014 at 05:12 PM
There are rumors I have heard about the Meadow Glen Mall as well. I heard that only Kohl's and Marshalls are staying as anchors and most all other stores will be replaced. The current closing Shaw's building is not big enough for a Walmart. It may not even be big enough for Market Basket although most people posting here want to see it there. It would be slightly large for Trader Joes. Who knows?? I hope that Medford officials will inform the public as to what plans they are aware of about both sites. One thing that has been confirmed is the Fellsway Plaza is replacing many tenants except for Stop and Shop. I hope Modell's remains there as well. I do not care about the other stores there. I feel this is in response to what is developing over at Assembly Square.

Trader joes!!
Elaine G January 30, 2014 at 01:12 PM
I always found that Star and Shaws had higher prices than Stop and Shop. Market Basket and Trader Joe's would be a good fit. The Market Basket in Burlington is huge and always so crowded. So a slightly smaller store in Medford might be nice. But with the family problems..... It would be nice to have a bigger Trader Joe's. Perhaps when the state allows businesses to have more than 3 liquor licenses they could sell their beer and wine there. They would have the room.

Market Basket is a wonderful store.Trade Joe's is so horrible
Asmine E Prince February 12, 2014 at 07:38 PM
Market Basket please please please please
Endri March 08, 2014 at 09:38 PM
Both are great stores, but since the Trader Joe's in Alewife is not too far, a Market Basket would be better. The one in Somerville is always crowded.
Alexa Mase March 09, 2014 at 12:55 PM
There's a huge Market Basket just up the road off of 16 after the bridge. Why would they want to put another one in Medford? I think that may be a lost cause. Also who sees these comments besides the readers? Do city planners looks at the comments?
Julie the Jarhead March 09, 2014 at 01:12 PM
I love Marker Basket, but the Somerville one is a madhouse and the Chelsea one is almost too big. I usually go up to the one in Woburn. I think a MB at the former Shaws would go a long way to alleviate these crowds. Unfortunately, I don't think we will see a new MB soon with the DeMoulas family battle.

please put a market basket there it would be so much easier
