What Should Go In at the Old Deb's Place Hair Salon Space in West Medford?

In our "Visions for Vacancies" series, we ask you what you'd like to see in vacant buildings or lots around Medford.

Each month Medford Patch presents a new vacant building or lot and asks you to tell us what you think would be the best use for it.

Forget what zone it's in, setback regulations and all the other zoning jargon that puts most people to sleep. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community?

This month's vacancy is the old Deb's Place Hair Salon space in West Medford, at 470 High St.

What do you think should go in this storefront? Let us know by posting a comment below.

A South Indian vegetarian restaurant -- or a vegetarian restaurant that does meals you can take home for dinner. Would love to have more amenities like this in our square.

A fruit and vegetable store. Since Johnnie's in West Medford closed, area residents have had to go far afield to get reasonably-priced fresh groceries, and now that the Alewife Johnnie's is going away, it's going to be much worse. A lot of people can't afford the prices at Whole Foods, I am sorry to say.

I've heard that the Medford Deli is interested in expanding and adding an eat-in area. If Blue Hydrangea, currently next door, would be willing to move into the Deb's Hair Salon space, or the Pompei Glass space which also recently became vacant, that could accommodate an expansion by Medford Deli.

A Cheap gas station would be nice

How about some retail?!? We are sorely lacking retail in West Medford. Maybe cool gifts -- keep it local, people -- how about a toy store (we have an ice cream shop, a dance studio and at least two day care centers, no shortage of kids). You know what really needs a grocery store? MEDFORD SQUARE. Whole Foods produce ain't cheap, but they've got a good house brand label and a decent hot food buffet.

A McKinnon's Market this would satisfy the fruit and produce deficit as well as add a meat market.
