5 Things: Thermo-Solar Energy to be Considered at Medford High

Here's five things. Monday, Feb. 6, 2012

Good morning, here are five things to know today:

1. Thermo Solar Energy to be Considered at Medford High: The city has received a $10,000 state grant to look into whether thermo-solar energy - generated through solar panels - would be feasible at Medford High School, Alicia Hunt, the city's energy efficiency coordinator, said Friday. The energy produced by the panels could potentially be used to heat the high school swimming pool once it is re-opened, she said.

2. Sunny and Warm: Highs are expected to be in the low-50s today with increasing sun into the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Highs tomorrow are expected in the low 40s.

LeVar Burton visited Tufts University's campus on the Medford/Somerville line Friday to be recognized for his contributions to children's media. Burton was given the 2012 Eliot-Pearson award at Distler Performance Hall Friday morning. Burton told the audience that he believed it was in his genetics to teach and inspire others - his mother being a teacher and his father a pastor. He also said that Fred Rogers - better known to most as Mr. Rogers - was one of the three great men he has ever known. After receiving the award, Burton read "Enemy Pie" by Tara Callahan King to a group of young children from the Eliot-Pearson Children's School. That was followed by a performance of the Reading Rainbow theme song by the Flannery Brothers Band, and an impromptu dance session with the kids and Burton.

The Honey Fitz Pub in Malden Center shut it's doors, and a Somerville resident made an appearance on Jeopardy. Those are a couple of the top headlines from around the region.

5. Pats Lose: The worst was saved for last, but it had to be acknowledged. The Patriots lost to the Giants last night. The good news: pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 19 - that's less than two weeks.
