Around the Region: Bomb Scare in Malden, Bike Parking in Somerville, Armed Robbery in Stoneham

Some of the top recent headlines from just beyond Medford's city bounds.

The intersection of Main and Pleasant Streets in Malden was evacuated Friday evening, as police used a robot to investigate a suspicious package outside of the military recruiment office there.  owner Clark Heighton said he saw the package - an open gym bag with protruding electronic wires - in front of the center and thought the worst.  "It was just weird, in front of a...federal office," he said, noting police thought it looked suspicious as well.

Bicyclists in Somerville will have an easier time finding a place to lock up their bikes this summer. After experimenting with the idea last year with two locations—one in Davis Square and one in Union Square—the city's bike corral program has expanded to 10 locations this year. Most of the corrals are already in place or in the process of being installed, according to an announcement from the city. Each corral fits in a parking spot on the street and has room for 14 bikes.

The body of a 16-year-old girl was pulled from Hill’s Pond in  at about 12:35 p.m. Monday by Arlington emergency personnel. The victim, , was found submerged in about 6 feet of water, according to a police news release. She was dead on arrival. According to a preliminary investigation, the death does not appear to be suspicious, police said. However, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office are assisting Arlington Police with a full investigation. An autopsy has also been scheduled.

Life Focus Center of Charlestown received a contract termination notice from the Department of Developmental Services for all its programs, with an effective date of June 16, 2012, according to an announcment from the center.

have released a surveillance photo captured during the at last weekend. At 8:02 p.m. April 14, police responded to a robbery in progress at the convenience store, located at 140 Franklin St., according to the police log. The suspect was reportedly carrying a black handgun, wearing a black net-like mask and a hooded sweatshirt, according to the store clerk.
