The Medford Sons of Italy Hall, at 42 Alfred St., plays a role in an extortion case involving Howie Winter, former boss of the notorious Winter Hill Gang. According to the district attorney's office, Winter and James Melvin allegedly tried to extort tens of thousands of dollars from two businessmen, making threatening statements and phone calls and leaving a threatening note at one victim's home. Some of the alleged meetings took place at the Medford Sons of Italy Hall.

Firefighters put out a fire at 369 Boston Ave. on the second floor of a residence the morning after Christmas.

Somerville Police arrested two people in connection to a Dec. 1 shooting in Winter Hill that sent a man to the hospital with non-fatal injuries and left bullet holes in a nearby car and home. Police said that leads connected the shooting to a stabbing reported in Medford about 30 minutes after the shooting.
