Week in Review: Housing Authority Faces Scrutiny, New Principal Picked

The Medford Housing Authority distributed nearly $8 million in aid in 2010 and 2011 without properly following federal guidelines, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The federal agency has instructed the housing authority to recoup any over-payments it made to landlords, or else pay back the $8 million, according to a letter from Housing and Urban Development Deputy Director Robert P. Cwieka to the housing authority dated April 4.

A new principal has been selected for Medford's Columbus Elementary School, according to a letter from its out-going principal. Kathleen Kay, currently the principal at Brookside Elementary School in Milford, will take over as principal on July 1, according to the letter from Columbus school principal Joan Yaeger.

Man with Medford Ties Deported to Brazil to Answer to Murder Charge: A Brazilian man living in Somerville and Medford under an alias has been deported to his homeland to answer to a murder charge, according to federal authorities. Jose Rogerio Ferreira de Souza, 20, was arrested by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents in Danvers in February 2011, but was not deported until Wednesday because he made "numerous appeals" to the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the Board of Immigration Appeals that were denied, according to a press release from the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

Investigators have identified at least 17 additional victims of the alleged pedophile and serial rapist., who was coerced into sending Hutchinson nude photos, which were used to blackmail her into having sex with him, prosecutors said.
