Where Should A Crosswalk Be Added in Medford?

Earlier this month, Medford Patch asked you where in the city drivers ignore stop signs most.

Now, we ask a new question: Where should a crosswalk be added in Medford?

What do you think? Let us know by posting a comment in the comments section below.

first, before the city invests in paint for crosswalks they should repair the sidewalks/lack of sidewalks and cut back the overhanging branches that hang over onto the sidewalks that smacks you in the face as your walking by. In my opinion every corner with heavy motor vehicle traffic should have a cross walk, at least that's how they do it in bigger cities and Capt. Clementi should call and remind folks that the state law is to yield to pedestrians on crosswalks....and please no bike lanes.

On Cross St. (Almost opposite Washington St.). There is a fence covered with a thick vegetation which runs the length of Cross St.. This fence has a walk thru gate from the 93 rotary. There is no indication that a person would be entering the street from the highway and you do not see them until you almost hit them. Very dangerous and a suit waiting to happen.

I work in Medford Square on a daily basis and the drivers do not stop for the crosswalks that already exist. The law needs to be enforced at the current crosswalks before there is talk of adding any new ones.

I totally agree with Cindy. However I would like to add that the folks that have bushes that extend onto the side walk should be force to trim them back so that two pedestrians can actually pass one another without one having to steep into the street.

The law applies to crosswalks that do not have a working signal, if there is a traffic signal present pedestrians must push the button to cross. if you are crossing against the light you shouldnt expect the traffic to stop and let you cross.

Try one on Elm Street on the corner of Aquavia Road. The cars drive so fast that you need to run across the street. Also there is no sidewalk on the Wright's pond side so you need to walk in the street and there is a bend in the road. Cars approaching from the skating rink can't see pedestrians.

On the sidewalk towards Wellington Station as you walk over the bridge on Rt 16 W towards the stairs, the sidewalk is in absolute disrepair. The fence is falling down, limb overhanging/smacking you in the face, concrete rebar is sticking out of the ground! The sidewalk pavement is completely cracked and ruined. Not to mention, on Brainard Ave intersection with Revere Beach Pkwy, there is a sign that reads no right turn from 7-9am and 4-6pm that is NEVER followed. I literally came within inches of my life tonight being run over by a car that didn't follow the rules, not to mention I was in an existing crosswalk. Medford is a complete $hithole compared to Somerville, and that is saying something!

Joe G.: Both of the Route 16 bridges (the one over the Malden River and the one over the tracks) both are going to be replaced, with significant improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists. Construction is scheduled to begin in Fall 2013.
