Medford went for the Guinness Book of World Records’ mark for most people caroling in Santa hats at its annual holiday celebration Saturday.

Despite an impressive 1,500 Santa-clad carolers turning up in Medford Square, the city fell short of Bob Jones University’s ridiculous record of 15,000. The Christian university in South Carolina broke Medford's old record last winter.

Also on Saturday, the city’s Jingle Bell 5K Walk/Run had over 390 runners. The race raised money for Medford High School athletic teams and clubs.

I'm confused. The old record was for singing Jingle Bells. Bob Jones University broke that last year. Medford organizers knew they couldn't break that record, so they were going for a *different* record - carolers in Santa Claus hats. Is information about that record available?

Agreed - I thought it was for carolers wearing Santa hats AND singing Jingle Bells. Either way, it was a fun event, and nice to have people out and about! I just wish there had been slightly better organization - I had no idea about the caroling beforehand, and initially went to City Hall where the Facebook page indicated I should go to register. Only when I got there, I was told I'd have to go to Century Bank. And there was no indication of when the actual "counting" took place. Still, I wish there could be more events like this in the Square. It's always disappointing to look on the "Town Square" section of Patch and see an update for something that looks really fun or interesting — only to then see that it's in Somerville...

Isn't another city trying to hijack "Jingle Bells" from Medford?

I agree medford needs to advertise stuff there doing better .. And also there should be way more fun family stuff to do in the city .. Somerville Malden etc do so much more on all holidays than Medford does... I'm glad they haven't stopped the jingle bell festivle cuz that's the only thing that's family fun in Medford besides the Halloween in the sq
