Is there a home school tax deduction?

Is there a tax advantage of home schooling my kids?


Home schooling your children does not have any tax write-offs.

Education credits and tuition deductions are restricted for post-secondary qualifying institutions. Home school expenses, like private K-12 tuition does not fit this criteria. These credits and deductions apply to college and some vocation/technical school tuitions.

The costs of materials and an Ipad used in teaching your child are considered a personal expenses and are not allowed as business deductions.

Your home and child are not registered 501c3 organizations, so a charitable deduction doesn’t work either. The IRS does not allow you to deduct gifts to yourself, family members or other individuals.

There is a $250 deduction available to teachers in a school for materials and equipment that is used in the classroom. The IRS has been adamant that this deduction is not allowed for homeschool programs.
