Your girlfriend/boyfriend could be your tax deduction

You might be missing out on a tax exemption, if an adult in your home has no income and you provide all the support for the housing costs. Most taxpayers think of tax exemptions as children, but your parents, brother/sister or even a friend might qualify. Dependent exemptions on your tax return need not be a blood-relative if the following conditions are true:

  1. The person is a U.S. citizen, or resident of North America.
  2. You provided most of the financial support for that person
  3. The person lived in your home all year.
  4. The person earned less than $3,900 last year.

If your boy/girlfriend or any other adult passes these qualification tests, you can receive another $3,800 exemption on your federal taxes and an extra $2,200 deduction on your MA state taxes.
