Save Energy and Money with a Programmable Thermostat

You can save energy and money and have a more comfortable home with a programmable thermostat. Great deal on $5 7-day programmable thermostats from National Grid.

If you heat with Natural Gas in Medford, there is a great deal of $4.95 for your choice of two popular 7-day programmable thermostats from EFI & National Grid after a $35 rebate.  See below for detailed instructions on how to get the deal.

I already have programmable thermostats in my home, but I just ordered 2 with this program.  I usually do not replace items that are working fine and do not reduce my energy consumption, but there are three features in the LuxPro Thermostate that my current thermostats lack which we will use:

  • Adjustable vacation hold – set for 1-30 days
  • Energy usage monitor
  • Smart recovery – enables the set temperature to be reached by the programmed time

When we go away for a long weekend or longer, we use the Hold feature on our thermostats to keep the heat down at 54°F while we are away.  The cats have fur coats and don't mind and that will prevent any pipes in our home from freezing.  You can read about other tips in our blog post Greening Your Home Before Travel.  The one downside to this is coming home to a cold house, usually right before the kids' bed time.  With the new programmable thermostat we'll be able to tell it how long we will be away and the heat can kick back on the day we are returning.

What can I say, I'm an energy geek and track our home energy usage in several ways.  You can read more in my posts about our electricity tracking with a TED5000 and figuring out What is Your HomeMPG.  I'm not exactly clear what this energy usage monitor will tell me, but I'm going to find out.

Another feature I've been interested in learning more about is the smart recovery which will enable me to set the time at which I want the house to be at a certain temperature and it will figure out when to turn on the heat.  Our current thermostats just enable us to turn the heat on at a certain time.

When my wife or I are asked what is the one thing everyone should do to save energy at home, our answer is to Install and Use a Programmable Thermostat.

With the $4.95 deal from EFI & National Grid now is the perfect time to upgrade to a 7-day programmable thermostat.

To get the deal price follow the link to EFI and find "Product Rebate" section on the right side.  Click on National Grid (gas) under Massachusetts.  Then choose which thermostat or thermostats you wish to purchase and checkout.  You will need your National Grid Gas Account number to complete the checkout and get the rebated price including free shipping.  You will need to pay sales tax as EFI has a brick & mortar store in Southborough.
