Jose F. DaSilva, Medford Resident, Gardener, Dies at 79

DaSilva made wine from the grapes he harvested.

Jose F. DaSilva, 79, passed away at home in Medford on October 13th, 2013.

He was born in the Azores on January 30th, 1934 to his parents Manuel and Conceicao (Garcia) Silva. Jose has been a resident of Medford since 1986. He was also a former resident of Cambridge and Somerville. Prior to his retirement, Jose worked as a cafeteria worker at Bank of Boston for more than 30 years. He was an avid gardener who enjoyed spending time growing vegetables, grapes, flowers and took special pride in his manicured lawn. Jose realized the fruits of his labor by making wine from the grapes he harvested.

He is survived by his wife, Maria (Cordeiro) DaSilva; by his children; John DaSilva and his wife Barbara of Westford, Joe DaSilva of LaConia, NH, Antero DaSilva of North Andover, Maria Smith and her husband Michael of Mansfield and Tony DaSilva of Medford; by his grandchildren; David, Marisa, Mackenzie and Matthew; and by his brothers; Joao Silva of the Azores and Manuel Silva of Toronto.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Thursday October 17th at 8 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden at 9 AM. Services will conclude with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday October 16th from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
