Obituary: Shirley Smith, 88, Former Medford Resident

Smith died Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Shirley F. (Niland) Smith, a 35 year resident of Alton Bay, N.H., formerly of Medford, died at the Edgewood Centre Nursing Home in Portsmouth, N.H., on Wednesday morning, Jan. 1, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Harold F. Leach and Robert M. Smith. She was 88.

Born in Winchester on Dec. 7, 1925, she was the beloved daughter of the late John and Edna (Holbrook) Niland. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother, always putting her families needs before her own.

She will be very sorely missed by her loving children: Mabel A. and her husband Brain W. Given of Medford and Thomas M. and his wife Jane K. Leach; cherished grandchildren: Karen and her husband Victor Favreau of Tyngsboro, Jeffrey and his wife Teresa Given of Haverhill, Amy and her husband Damon Iannillo of New York, Timothy and Jenifer Leach, both of Epping, N.H., Allison Leach of Texas, Sharon Leach of North Andover and the late Glenn F. Leach Jr.; dear great-grandchildren: Julianna, Sarah, Stephanie and Alissa Given, Rebecca and Jenna Favreau, Elizabeth Leach and Avery Iannillo; daughters-in-law: Nancy Leach of North Andover and Lynne Leach of Woburn. She was also the mother of the late Glenn F. Leach and sister of the late Phyllis Quigley Sherman.

Her funeral service will be celebrated in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Ave., Medford, Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at 6 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, prior to the service from 3-6 p.m. Interment will be privately held at a later date. Donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
