Obituary: Sophia Standke

Standke lived in Medford for 53 years.

Sophia J. Standke, 86, a 53 year resident of Medford, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

She was born in Cambridge on Aug. 21, 1927 to her parents Frank and Mary (Kasabuska) Miskevitch. Sophia was raised and educated in Cambridge, graduating from Longfellow Grammar School and Cambridge High & Latin, Class of 1945. She worked as a secretary for the Lever Brothers Soap Company; for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts under Governor Michael J. Dukakis and retired as an administrator at the Copley Square Hotel.

She was a dedicated volunteer in Medford and the surrounding communities, serving as Past Chaplain of the American Legion Women's Auxilliary; as a member of the Medford Historical Society and the Royall House in Medford. She was also a volunteer at the Museum of Science in Cambridge.

She is survived by her husband, Rudolf K. Standke; by her sons: Rudi Standke of Plaistow, N.H., and Eric Standke of Medford; by her grandchildren: Catherine, Rachel, Erika, Kurt and Leeanne; by her great granddaughter Sarina; and by her sister Alice Fraser of Marlborough. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Sophia was predeceased by her sister Jane Corbati and by her brother Frank Miskevitch.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours held at the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden, on Thursday, March 6, from 4-8 p.m. Interment will take place in East Deering Cemetery in the spring.
