Middlesex Sheriff’s Officer from Medford Honored for Heroic Act

A Middlesex Sheriff’s officer from Medford was honored Friday at the State House for his heroic act.

Robert Wright received the Medal of Valor at the Massachusetts Correctional Employee of the Year Awards Ceremony.

On June 3, 2012, while off-duty at a park in Cambridge, Wright ran toward the sound of gunfire to assist two victims of a double shooting.

Wright, a trained EMT, ran to a fatally wounded teenager and immediately began performing CPR. He did so until Cambridge rescue personnel arrived on scene. A second teen was attended to by additional rescue personnel.

“Unarmed and off-duty, Officer Wright responded to a highly dangerous and unfolding incident not knowning who – or what – he would find,” Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian said. “His actions that evening were extraordinary and exemplify the very best of those in the corrections field.”

Earlier this year, Wright was recognized by both of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office and the Cambridge Police Department for his actions.

He received the Humanitarian Award at the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office 2013 Employee Recognition Ceremony in May and the Allen McPherson Citizen Services Award by Cambridge Police in June.
