Ashleigh Baudin, 25, died in in a crash early Sunday morning on Route 93 southbound in Stoneham, according to State Police. Her passenger has not been identified by police.

A Methuen woman died and her passenger was seriously injured during a crash on Route 93 early Sunday morning, according to a State Police press statement.

On Monday morning, police identified the accident victim as Ashleigh Baudin, 25. Her passenger—a Medford man—has not been identified by police.

At about 3:30 a.m., troopers from the Medford Barracks responded to Route 93 southbound in Stoneham, south of Route 128, on a report of a motor vehicle crash, according to a press statement.

"Upon arrival they found that a car had crashed into the rear of a box truck that had been parked in the breakdown lane with its emergency flashers activated," reads the statement. "Preliminary investigation indicates that the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle was traveling southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, it drifted into the breakdown lane and into the rear of the truck, entrapping the driver and a passenger.

Baudin was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The unidentified woman's passenger was a man from Medford, according to police. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with serious injuries.

"Notifications have been made to his family; however, since we have not yet found his friend’s family, we are not identifying him either," according to the statement.

The debris field from the crash covered the right two lanes and the breakdown lane and those lanes had to be closed, according to police.

"During the investigation, a marked cruiser was parked in the second travel lane from the right, with all its emergency lights activated. The trooper was out of the cruiser," reads the statement. "An A&S Towing tow truck was also parked nearby. All emergency vehicles at the scene were parked within a coned-off area that was further demarcated by an arrow board.

"Nonetheless, a passing Toyota Camry being operated by a Lawrence man veered into the emergency set-up and struck the tow truck and then the cruiser. There were no injuries to the trooper or tow operator," according to police.

The alleged drunk driver who crashed into the cruiser and the tow truck, Albert Vasquez, 29, of Lawrence, complained of chest pain after being taken to the Medford Barracks, according to the statement. Vasquez was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he remains under guard, according to police.

Vasquez, who was taken into custody on drunk driving-related charges, will be arraigned in Woburn District Court on Monday.

Vasquez’s passenger, Ariane Mahon, 27, of Brookline, remains at Lahey Clinic with minor injuries, reads the statement.

The facts and circumstances of the crashes remain under investigation. The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction team will generally take a few weeks to complete their final report.

Has anyone else noticed how poor the lighting is on Route 93 in parts of Stoneham? The street lighting on 93 in Medford and Woburn seems brighter. Why is that?
