Democrat Medford City Councilor Throws Support to Scott Brown

Scott Brown: Elizabeth Warren a "jobs destroyer."

A self-described lifelong Democrat, Medford City Councilor Rick Caraviello announced his support for the re-election of Republican U.S. Senator Scott Brown Monday.

Brown and Caraviello spent Monday morning touring businesses and shaking hands with passersby in West Medford and Medford Square. Caraviello, owner and founder of R.C. Limo Service, said he's supporting Brown because he is tired of federal regulations and taxes on small businesses.

"It makes it hard for us to do business," Caraviello said inside Magnificent Muffin and Bagel Shoppe Monday morning.

Although Caraviello is a registered Democrat, he isn't exactly dyed blue. He said has voted for Republicans in the past, and his political ideology has an Independent ring to it.

"I vote for the person, not the party," he said.

Still, it's support Brown will gladly take.

"We'll take his vote. A very influential, hard working, longtime resident, city councilor, Democrat - we'll take that," Brown said during a stop at West Medford Auto and Hardware Supply. "I don't care if he's a Democrat or an Independent, bottom line is, I'm out here fighting for jobs and the economy, working to protect the middle class."

Brown also took the opportunity to draw a line between himself and his Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard Law professor and Special Advisor for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

"There are two different philosophies between Professor Warren and me," Brown said. "She's a jobs destroyer. She wants to raise your taxes, more regulations, more money out of your pocket books and wallets and into the federal government's."

Here, here, Rick. Good for you! Vote for the person, not the party! I totally agree with you, which is why I became an 'independent'. Ps... Scott Brown's office does get back to you too! ;)

Kenny, You Can't Argue What You Don't Know. I Understand.. Its Your Way Of Bowing Out Gracefully. I Am American And Now Feel Sorry For You. God Bless You.
Jack D. July 18, 2012 at 12:11 AM
I did not say that Jeff. I said: "Workers should unionize to fight for what they deserve and prevent business owners from getting too greedy and exploitative." I mentioned no exceptions, no qualifiers. I believe in unions. But I think your rhetoric is over the top. Not all business owners are the bad guys. I'd also like you to please answer my previous question - There isn't a single store, shop, restaurant, bar, ect. that you enjoy going to?
Kenny July 18, 2012 at 12:25 AM
God bless all Americans. I have seen what the world is and appreciate America I am not bowing out but it seems you are an authority on everything and I don't want you to interupt your agenda. Spend some of your time visiting a veterans hospital and see what I mean.
MB July 18, 2012 at 02:02 AM
Yes I am a business owner. My employees work for me because I pay them fairly, and those who don’t think I pay fairly either don’t take a job with me or leave and go on to other jobs. That’s life. One size does not fit all. I built my business, I earn my customer’s business and I pay my taxes, I follow labor laws and pay dues, insurances, surcharges etc…My employees earn a wage that is mutually agreed upon; I don’t put a gun to their head to take the job. Your union would hang you out to dry if you were a business owner. Don’t think for a minute they would be your salvation. Business owners struggle because of all of the taxes imposed on them, not because they are greedy. If I paid less in taxes I would certainly be able to pay my employees more, and when my taxes go up I am forced to pay them less, because I am a middle class family and I need to put food on the table and that is just the way it goes. Don’t lecture me on what business owners should or should not do. Again, go open your own business up and then let’s talk. But by the content of your remarks, you don’t have a mind of your own to do something like that. So continue your socialist rants, just know a few things: You make no sense. You insult those who are the backbone of community and contrary to what your beliefs are you are not entitled to what others have earned! By the way, who will supply the lost jobs once you get your dream of putting the greedy, exploitative businesses out of business?
cindy July 18, 2012 at 12:25 PM
nicely put MB. One of my old employers is getting around the union by hiring LPN's. I watched my old co-workers get laid off bc of these high demands unions make, what's an employer to do? well they Lay off the non union workers. so much for unity when one group of people are so greedy that they dont care if the person they walk by down the hall loses their job. If there wasn't a union cuts would be made accordingly by all depts. that sounds fair to me. MB I too work for a small business owner and he pays me a lot more than when I was employed by a big company. My health insurance is pricey, i look at it this way if im not paying high health care costs im paying higher taxes I might as well invest on my health and not the folks on the dole.
cindy July 18, 2012 at 12:27 PM
and while your at the VA drive further down the street to the Lemuel shattuck hospital the state run mental health hospital. Not even central Ac on the lock down units.
Jack D. July 18, 2012 at 01:00 PM
I disagree with your logic MB. The taxes and regulations you speak of also apply to your competitors in whatever industry you operate. If you have increased costs you need to pass those expenses on to the customer, not cut wages. Choosing the latter makes you an exploitative employer.
ella watson July 18, 2012 at 01:08 PM
Kenny, Its Funny when anyone on here posts a comment on patch or don't agree others...you are labeled Un-American or you haven't seen the bad or sad times in life, or your accused of being on welfare or you have an ebt card card issue. You haven't a clue what other people go through. Then you knock people for giving their opinion. It explains a lot about your character towards and about residents of Medford. I'm A Medford High Grad..No College. I'm far from being a know it all. I work in a law library and read a lot. Just because you and cindy think that because I don't agree with you two..I have no-idea what veterans or mentally challenged people go through. You don't know me...and that is a blessing. Cindy, what are you doing to get the AC put on...or do you just throw these statements to the air. Is that why you called Scott Browns office was to get the Ac turned on? or were you calling him to have Romney disclose his taxes? My contributions to veterans doesn't need your approval..its from my heart..I don't throw it in peoples faces. Both of you are too intelligent for my taste. I'm allergic to nuts.
Jeff C July 18, 2012 at 01:59 PM
That's what I'm talking about Jack. Glad to see you're with the program. I knew you stood with the people. And to answer your question about where I go to enjoy myself. I used to go to Colleens for an occasional ice cream until I saw the Hummer parked in the back. Unbelievable. Her employees toil behind the counter for what? So she can drive around in a Hummer.
MB July 18, 2012 at 02:22 PM
Jack, I pay my employees generously. If my prices are competitive, then there is no room to raise those with out risking my overall volume, if volume goes down then there will be less money to pay employee earnings. Sorry but it is just basic economics. I wouldn’t cut the hourly wage, but likely the number of hours or bonus pay would suffer. If I could raise prices I would, but isn’t that hurting a different segment of society now? In the end, increasing costs on businesses hurts the economy. Let’s stop raising taxes so everyone can keep more of the money they earn and spend it as they so chose. We all have expenses, business owners are also part of the middle class and need to feed their family, cloth their children and worry about retirement. We are not rolling in money; we are just motivated to work for ourselves. Perhaps someone in your family will someday want that for them self, I would hope there is opportunity in the future to allow that dream to continue to flourish. That is what is so great about this country. We have the gift of freedom to define ourselves, if one day you chose to open your own business; wouldn’t it be nice to reap the rewards of your hard work? The risk you took? Before money comes the best part of owning your own business is the great feeling of knowing you made something others appreciate and will contribute to the economy.

Have you seen the Rick Caraviello waffle at Pancake House? Caraviello jumps the fence every other week...usually to get one of his flip flopper slippers that went to the side of the fence he forgot he was on. For those who don't watch the City Council regularly, Caraviello replaced Mark Arena who seemed to be a puppet of/for his father (and the Mayor). Caraviello wants to be an independent voice and he wants to hang on to the Mayor's ever-shortening coat tails. Rick, this was not the smartest of moves. Remember, Councilors with names ending in "o" are "owned" by the Mayor
cindy July 18, 2012 at 04:16 PM
wow your really sensitive. I called Sen Brown's office for other issues. When I noticed Shattuck didnt have AC Ted Kennedy was still in office. Btw thanks for the nuts comment, sh*%T don't bother me rolls right off my shoulder. Practice what you preach I never stated I disagreed with anyone I just stated I agreed with ONE person. Your entitled to your opinion just like everyone else and I will express mine how I please. Thanks for your feedback Ella and I get the comment about nuts since thats what the shattuck caters too (mental health) since I know they have no ac means Ive been their visiting someone.
ella watson July 18, 2012 at 05:09 PM
OMG..Their hasn't been Ac since Ted was in office..and you know about it and do nothing to change it.
cindy July 18, 2012 at 08:31 PM
im opening my wallet right now...your ridiculous obviously you have never dealt with mental health facilities and I guess you dont remember deval making cuts to mental health facilities a few years back. tell me what you do ella, other than just running your mouth here on the patch. You seem all high and mighty and that you can take on everything by yourself but the fact of the matter is you cant go at it alone. So you are left with your own ramblings and you criticize ppl like kenny, MB and myself. Maybe there is a reason medford citizens dont show up at city hall...just maybe we dont want to be in the company of ppl like you since your allergic to nuts...this will be my last comment to you. have your last word because you cant argue with stupid, stupid.
Public Access Producer July 18, 2012 at 08:37 PM
Just a note to everyone: it appears that Ella and Cindy are going back and forth; please understand that when reading the comments. I do not believe these are responses to my comment but a previous "thread" on this story that they were involved with.

Hey comrade "Jeff C" it's time to put away the Pete Seeger records and take a break from reading the lastest Wobblies newsletter. Now Colleen Hallisey is an enemy of state? Are you for real? What time does the picket line go up? That woman has done more for this community than you will ever do. The magnitude of your ignorance when it comes to basic economics and business is staggering. Colleen took the risk, worked hard, and earned it. SHE earned it. What do you do with the money you (ahem) earn comrade? Donate it to the (democrat) "Party" I'm sure. I bet you coo & swoon when your hero Obama bashes business. It's because you both have one thing in common, you both hate successful business. Contrary to liberal/socilalist beliefs no one owes you anything. You are certainly not entitled to what I have earned. Nor are you entitled to what successful business owners and entrepreneurs have earned. Despite your twisted liberal/socialist/commie claim that it's for "the common good". Speaking of Colleens. If your idol Obama ever came to Medford because "Medford reliably votes democrat and gets it" as you said, and he went to Colleens for a sappy photo op you wouldn't have a problem with Colleens then would you? No far from it. You would be one of the useful idiots jumping up and down on the sidewalk wearing a drool bib squealing: "he likes pistachio nut, o my gawd... the messiah likes pistachio nut".

I think Rick made a good choice.
patrick July 20, 2012 at 01:52 AM
Must we not forget Rich is a father of children living in Medford, a local business owner and elected public official. How many politicians do you see walking the streets everyday, trying to make a difference? Right or wrong Rich got out of bed that day to try to make a difference in your lives, Rich had nothing to benefit from showcasing your and mine State Senator. We as a country need to stop bashing our elected officials. They won a election. I would expect to see 45 new faces out there holding signs endorsing your self next year if you can do better. It is a thankless job. Rich would be better off taking a night job than working for the city of Medford. This country needs to stick together, The world is falling apart. The president, Rich, Warren, can not fix the issues with such negativity! Rich doesn't care what party you support, his only desire is to make the city a better place. lets all help help him. Tomorrow lets show some support and tone down the negativity . Work together ,think positive. Lets all be happy we have a home, healthy family and what little money we have. Lets concentrate on keeping the pledge in schools, helping Veterans , and flying our proud flag. Were did snubbing the president get Tim Thomas? Respect your officials .

Patrick, elected officials have to earn our respect. That's the trouble with many of them, just because they are skilled at winning elections doesn't mean they have the skills necessary for the job the people need them to do. I like Rick Caraviello, but having spoken with him on a number of occasions I feel he doesn't understand the complexities of "Medford politics". The City Council is an entirely different animal than the Chamber of Commerce. Mark Arena found that out. How can I have respect for a Mayor who smiles for the camera and complete ignores our infrastructure. This Mayor is no novice, he's going on his 26th year and a police station is falling apart. Blindly respect a failure of a Mayor? No way. Mr. Caraviello has had his run-ins with Michael J. McGlynn too and has expressed disappointment to me in regards to our Mayor. Question authority. Do not blindly think that the Maiocco family selling a piece of land to the McGlynn family like the sale of the Cephas home (a relative of Council president Robert Maiocco) to a William Breslin Brady (Mike McGlynn's son-in-law). The sale price is $295,000.00, the mortgage is $465,750.00 and the value of the land and the home (165 Woburn St - corner of Brooks & Woburn streets) is $563,500.00. Read that a few times and tell me why I should respect Council President Maiocco and Mayor McGlynn. Sellers name Brook St. Rt. If the elected officials want some respect they need to be transparent.
ella watson July 20, 2012 at 11:28 AM
I would like to know... " Although Caraviello is a registered Democrat, he isn't exactly dyed blue. He said has voted for Republicans in the past, and his political ideology has an Independent ring to it."...."I vote for the person, not the party," he said. Did Rick C. mention this in his campaign, that he voted Republican in the past. I know a lot of residents and some business owners have been talking and asking that question..and most said if they had known..they would not have voted for him. I for one can no-longer wait for transparency..we as citizen need to get the truth out..if the politicians don't want to come clean...there are those of us in Medford that will provide the truth..even if no-one wants to hear/see it or not. The residents will be informed of where there Tax Dollars are going..and if they are being wasted. All the politicians in Medford should embrace this in an ethical and way..otherwise "whatcha-hiding".
Jeff C July 20, 2012 at 11:53 AM
You never miss an opportunity to sling mud at our Mayor and his family do you?
Jeff C July 20, 2012 at 05:09 PM
I'll proudly stand in solidarity with my fellow workers for President Obama, Elizabeth Warren or any other candidate who understands the struggles of the working class. Regardless of location. You, Red Rick Caraviello and the business owners and entrepreneurs that you mentioned can continue to hammer workers and fret over wealth and status.
Public Access Producer July 20, 2012 at 08:22 PM
Wow, Jeff C. So, you are supporting the wrongful conduct of this Mayor? Most people issue conjecture or rhetoric, meanwhile I'm videotaping real life events and making positive changes in this city with FACTS and Jeff C calls it "slinging mud." Let's be logical, Jeff, if the camera catches the facts, and we're slinging those facts that the Mayor is caught up in, then it is the Mayor swimming in mud and those pointing it out are slinging it. right? In that case tell the Mayor to hang his head in shame, resign and we'll focus the camera on the honest politicians who can step up and replace that mean-spirited, selfish dictator.
Public Access Producer July 20, 2012 at 08:23 PM
Let me repeat: they have to EARN our respect. It isn't a given. Attacking the messenger is a cheap shot, Jeff C.
Richie M July 20, 2012 at 09:05 PM
Hey comrade "Jeff C", I'm about to leave work and enjoy the weekend that YOU brought me. I think I'll indulge in a little "invidious consumption" in your honor. Hasta la Victoria Siempre!
Mike July 21, 2012 at 04:01 PM
Thank you, Rick for finally letting us know where you stand. My partner and I will NOT be voting for you in 2013.
Paolo47 July 22, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Rick, sounds like you used the D next to your name to get elected only. You have lost a lot of votes for supporting Scotty Boy. We can see through him and now we can see through you.
ron brown August 21, 2012 at 01:29 AM
Grow up all you Caraviello bashers.......The man he showed around our city is a "UNITED STATES SENATOR" and a member since 1979 of our "UNITED STATES ARMY NATIONAL GUARD"...Colonel at that. Every politician in the city regardless of his/her political party should have extended greetings to the Senator, when he came to visit, its a matter of respect, something this country is lacking more and more and thats why we are in the shape we are ........Liberals are destroying this country................. Hooray for Caraviello, at least he speaks the truth and doesn't hide his real thoughts..............keep going Rick
