McGlynn Won't Run For Congress

Mayor says Medford is his "first love."

The longest-tenured mayor in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts loves his current job and isn't seeking a different one.

Wednesday afternoon, Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn announced he would not be a candidate for the 5th U.S. Congressional District seat currently held by .

"My full attention for many years has been and will continue to be to improve the quality of life for all in the City of Medford," McGlynn said.

McGlynn, Medford's mayor since Jan. 1988, was once a candidate for Congress when Markey previously sought a Senate seat.

He thanked those who called to offer their support and said it would be an "honor" to serve in Washington.

"However, it is no secret that politically, Medford is my first love," McGlynn said. I am a proud son of Medford and its greatest cheerleader. I have put before the members of the Medford School Committee and Medford City Council a very aggressive agenda for the year ahead. I look forward to working with them to see its completion and beyond."

McGlynn was offering the statement "to provide my supporters the opportunity to make an informed decision about other potential candidates for Congress."

Medford Rep. Carl Sciortino has announced his intention to run for the Congressional seat.

Markey will face fellow Congressman Stephen Lynch in the Democratic primary in April.
