Medford Forms New Bicycle Commission

During a Friday press conference, Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn announced the formation of the new Medford Bicycle Advisory Commission.

McGlynn said there have been several recent tragic incidents involving bicyclists in Greater Boston and the new commission will help establish criteria for biking in the city.

"We want to make biking more welcoming and safe in this community," McGlynn said.

Resident Bruce Kulik and Susan Altman of Green Medford have spearheaded the effort to get the commission started.

Kulik said some of the short-term goals for the commission are to complete a census to find how much bicycle traffic exists in Medford, to complete a map of all the roads and paths for bicycle traffic to see where there may be issues, make infrastructure suggestions to the mayor and to provide public education about safe bicycle and motor vehicle operation.

"We are looking for approximately 10 people and we'd like to invite people to apply," Kulik said.

Prospective members should preferably have:

• An active interest in bicycling
• Experience/interest in community outreach (e.g., social media, press releases, etc.)
• Interest in learning about some technical aspects that relate to biking (e.g., bike lanes, dedicated bike paths, motor vehicle laws)
• Experience with Medford’s roads as someone who lives in, works in, or commutes through Medford.

If you are interested in applying to the Commission, please submit a letter as your application. Address the letter to Mayor Michael McGlynn. Include your name and contact information, and a brief description (about 1-3 paragraphs) of why you would like to be on the Commission and any relevant experience (such as service with a community group) that would make you a suitable member. Applications are due by Friday, March 15, 2013.
