Students who take the bus had the option of being dropped off a block away, too.

Columbus School in South Medford joined schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 3, 2012.

Students who live within one half mile of the Columbus School were encouraged to walk to school Wednesday, and Principal Kathleen Kay arranged for buses to drop students off one block from school so students who live further away could make the walk as well.

“We love to see students walking to school because we know that regular physical activity like this makes the students more likely to develop life-long healthy habits” said Syrah McGivern, the Medford Health Department’s Community Transformation Coordinator. "...the data shows that students that walk to school get more exercise in other parts of their life as well.”

In 2011, International Walk to School Day was celebrated at more than 4,000 events at schools across the United States, along with children and adults in 40 countries around the world.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.
