Tufts Honors Japan With Awareness Efforts
The Japanese Culture Club held a massive photo op, a panel discussion, and sent supportive letters to Japanese students to honor the one-year anniversary of the earthquake that triggered tragedy in Japan.
Kenichi Nozaki, a senior at Tufts and a member of the school's Japanese Culture Club, sent us this statement about the group's recent efforts:
Recently our organization, with the help of Tufts students and faculty, organized a photo of over 100 members of the Tufts community to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the tragedy of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Our first photo formed the image of the Japanese flag and our second photo formed the message "Tufts Loves Japan." The photo was taken on Wednesday, March 7th, on the patio of the Tufts University Tisch Library.
Along with the photos, the club organized several activities and events during the week of March 11, including letters and messages for Japanese students written by Tufts students, as well as a panel discussion of Tufts professors discussing the implications of the one year anniversary of the disaster. While the Tufts community helped to raise over $10,000 in 2011, the club decided that awareness and remembrance was far more important one year after the earthquake.
