Mustangs Continue Playoff Push

With nearly all of the Medford High teams looking like good bets for the postseason, all that remains is to handle the business left on the schedule.

Medford boys baseball continued its march towards the postseason last week, and swept through the schedule in fine fashion.

The Mustangs handled Framingham 2-1, in eight innings on May 10, behind a 3-for-3 performance from Chris Hayes—who also plated a precious run with an RBI double in the third inning.

Next up for Medford (11-2, 4-2 GBL) was a Greater Boston League tilt with the Somerville Highlanders, which the Mustangs dominated with relative ease, 14-3, on May 12. Another dance with the Flyers awaited Medford on May 14, and this time they left no room for drama.

The Mustangs bested Framingham for the second time last week, this time 12-3. Danny Gilchrist gave Medford an early lead with a two-run homer in the first, and Hayes plated two with a double in the sixth.

On the softball diamond Medford played three games last week, and pulled down a pair of wins.

After spotting Somerville five runs in the first inning on May 12, the Mustangs charged back with 18 unanswered runs and duly collected a lopsided 21-5 Greater Boston League win at Tufts Park. Freshman phenom Sarah Donnelly collected four hits and six RBIs—including a huge two-RBI triple in the second inning. The Mustangs senior captains also came up big against the Highlanders, with Kristina Bove going 3-for-3, with four RBIs, four runs scored and pitching her way to her fifth win of the year on the mound as well, while Sarah Moulton slapped a pair of doubles, collecting four RBIs and scoring two runs.

Medford (9-4) would go on to down Revere 10-2 on May 13, and end the week with a 3-0 loss against Framingham.

Moving over to the lacrosse field, the Mustangs boys team only saw action on one occasion last week, and took care of business. Medford handled Marian in a non-league test on May 12 by a 12-5 margin.

The girls played three times, slipping past North Reading 9-8 on May 10, and blasting Dracut 20-8 on May 13, before succumbing to Central Catholic 13-8 on May 14.

Olivia and Katherine Timmins continued to lead the Mustangs, as they combined for 12 goals against the Middies of the lame-duck Merrimack Valley Conference, and Olivia posted four against North Reading, helping Medford erase a three-goal deficit at the break and earn a come-from-behind win. 

Madie Forcier netted the game winner for the Mustangs.

On May 14, Medford (12-3) couldn’t overcome being outscored 7-1 in the first half and fell to Central Catholic at Edgerly Field.

The tennis court saw some action as well last week, and the Medford boys took one out of four matches during that interval.

Things didn’t get off to that promising of a start, as the Mustangs fell to O’Bryant 4-1 in a GBL clash on May 9, and Latin Academy by the same score the following day. Medford finally got on the right side of the ledger against Somerville on May 12, with a 4-1 victory, but ended the week by being swept by Malden, 5-0 on May 13.

The Medford track squads saw action last week as well, with both being defeated by Malden at Macdonald Stadium on May 12.

Highlights for the Medford boys included Mark Aime, who took the intermediate hurdles with a time of 67.1, Brian Bourne won the mile at 5:03, Patrick Coughlin placed third in the hurdles at 20 seconds, Larry Keating pulled down third in the 200 with a 27.6 mark, and did the same in the javelin with a throw of 86-5, Even Nevers placed third in the high jump at 28-8, and the 4x100 relay team placed first.

For the girls, Francesca Spirito won the 200 at 31.5 seconds, Katherine Ellersick placed second in the 400 (63.1), Ariana Fiorello took second in the 100 and Winny Kwong placed second in the two-mile run at 14:10.8.
