Tufts To Host Its Largest Regatta This Saturday

Tuft's biggest regatta of the rowing season will kick off this Saturday at 9 a.m., and the public is welcome to watch the school take on Bates, Wesleyan, Wellesley, and the University of New Hampshire.

will host its largest regatta of the spring 2012 season this Saturday, hosting Wesleyan University, Wellesley College, Bates College, and the University of New Hampshire for a 23-race card. Crews will be racing on Tufts home Malden River Course on seven minute centers beginning at 9:30 a.m. Wesleyan, Bates and UNH return for the 11th consecutive year in the series, which dates back to the early 1990s between host Tufts and Wesleyan.

Bates Women’s Rowing is the reigning NCAA Division III National Silver Medalist, and is currently ranked 2nd in the early 2012 polls, with Wellesley, Wesleyan and Tufts all receiving mention in the national polls. Tufts is 2-1 in early season races, with solid wins over Tulane and Mt. Holyoke. On the Men’s side, Wesleyan has showed good early season form at the Varsity level, while Tufts Novice Eight is undefeated in three early season races.

The event is open to the public.  Race spectators can view most of the race course from the Tufts Boathouse located at River’s Edge, 300 River’s Edge Drive, Medford; on the shores of the Malden River. Additional spectator access is also available at the Finish line behind 300 Commercial Street in Malden.

The River Cafe at 200 River's Edge Drive, just south of the Tufts Boat House, will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 12 noon.

Driving directions to the boathouse:

• Take Mass Pike all the way into Boston until it connects to the new Liberty Tunnel. Then follow signs for Route 93 North.
• Follow Route 93 North to exit 29: (Route 28/ Route 38). (You get to take the new underground artery and go over the Zakim Bridge. Stay to the left when you enter the tunnel).
• At the bottom of the exit ramp bear right onto Route 28 North
• Follow Route 28 North for approximately 1 mile to Wellington Circle. As you approach the lights get into the right lane.
• Take a right onto Route 16 East. In consecutive order you pass the newly opened Kelly’s Roast Beef, then you will see the MBTA train yard on your right. (This all happens within about ¼ mile). Take the right hand exit part way up the incline and follow it back around underneath Route 16.
• At the stop light go straight ahead onto River's Edge Drive (Go straight at the first light)
• Go about 0.5 (5/10) miles and take a right at the second light. (Main Entrance to River’s Edge)

• The Tufts University Athletic Department Event Management Staff will meet you in the parking lot and direct you where to park.
