On Thanksgiving morning, one of the oldest rivalries in the history of U.S. high school football will be played out at MacDonald Stadium in Malden for an extraordinary 125th time.
However, this year old rivalries will meet new media, as alumni, family and friends across the country will be able to watch the action live at 10 a.m. between the Medford High School Mustangs and Malden High School Golden Tornadoes thanks to a first-ever webcast of the game.
Made in Medford, the local segment of Comcast’s Project Open Voice, will be streaming the game live on Medford High School’s channel www.madeinmedford.com/medfordhs.
Part of Comcast’s Project Open Voice, Made in Medford, is dedicated to exploring new and innovative ways that local programming – including public, educational and government media – can be made available in a community. The Made in Medford website and video-on-demand component are designed to support the interaction between residents and visitors, help connect them with what’s going on around Medford and show them where to find additional content on a given subject matter.
The website will also archive the game on the channel for future viewing and feature videotaped highlights of several of Medford High School’s traditional pre-game events, including:
- Tuesday, Nov. 20: Annual pre-game lunch with Medford and Malden football coaches, captains, AD's, principals and all seniors from both teams. The event – which started in 2008 – will be larger than usual this year and held at John Brewer’s Tavern in Malden, which also features mural commemorating the historic rivalry.
- Wednesday, Nov. 21: Annual Pep rally in the MHS gym
The Annual Headmaster's Dinner with the Medford football team, cheerleaders, coaches, and parent boosters, will also be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21 but won’t be videotaped.
Over the years, Medford has won the match-up 54 times, with Malden capturing 60 victories, and 10 games ended up as ties. Medford last won in 2006, the game played in Malden that year.
