Wilmington Boys Hockey Edges Medford in Double Overtime

Wilmington advanced to the North Division 1 semifinal round with a 1-0 win.

Medford came inches from winning its North Division 1 boys quarterfinal match up in the first overtime on Saturday night. But a crossbar stood in the way of victory, and minutes later it was Wilmington doing the celebrating at Chelmsford Forum.

The Wildcats and Mustangs played about as evenly as two teams can play for close to 55 minutes of hockey. But Wilmington took advantage of a Medford mistake in double overtime and capitalized with a the game-winning goal, eliminating the locals with a 1-0 win.

Chelmsford Forum held its collective breath in the first overtime as D.J. Galvin rang the crossbar, but after six minutes of extra time the game remained scoreless.

In the second extra session, Medford was called for too many men on the ice. Wilmington's Cody McGowan took advantage, firing home a slap shot from the point to allow the Wildcats to move on, ending the Mustangs' stellar season.
