Monday Essentials: 5th Congressional Primary Tuesday

A look at the week ahead in Medford.

1.) The 10 candidates – seven Democrats and three Republicans – vying for U.S. Sen. Ed Markey’s former 5th Congressional seat will be narrowed down to two (one from each party) Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the primary.

The Democrats are state Sen. Will Brownsberger, state Sen. Katherine Clark, Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, Martin Long, Paul John Maisano, state Sen. Karen Spilka and state Rep. Carl Sciortino. The Republicans are Frank Addivinola, Michael Stopa and Tom Tierney.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

2.) Elizabeth Reian Bennett will play and discuss the Japanese flute at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Medford Public Library. More >>

3.) Sam Baltrusis, author of “Ghosts of Cambridge, Haunts of Harvard Square and Beyond,” and Renee Mallett, author of “Haunted Colleges and Universities of Massachusetts,” will be at Bestsellers Cafe at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. More >>

4.) St. Joseph’s is holding its Harvest Supper at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18. More >>

5.) There is a winter coat drive for homeless veterans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Medford Fire Headquarters. More >>
