Police Identify Medford Bank Robbery Suspect

East Cambridge Savings Bank robbed at 243 Salem St. in Medford Wednesday.

Medford Police have identified the suspect in Wednesday afternoon's robbery at the East Cambridge Savings Bank on Salem Street as Robert Cornejo, 26, of Russell Street in Malden. Police said Cornejo has been charged with armed robbery while masked and faces arraignment today in Somerville District Court. Cornejo is alleged to have entered the bank at 243 Salem St. shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday wearing a ski mask and passed a note to a teller saying he had a gun and demanded money. Police said a dye pack exploded in a bag with money given to Cornejo. After a description of a gray Volkswagen as a getaway vehicle was circulated to local law enforcement, a similar vehicle driven by a female was stopped in Chelsea. The driver was interviewed …

Medford Bank Robbed, Malden Man Arrested

Suspect allegedly passed a note at East Cambridge Savings Bank saying he had a gun while demanding money.

A man from Malden was arrested Wednesday afternoon shortly after he allegedly robbed the East Cambridge Savings Bank at 243 Salem St. in Medford. Medford Police Capt. Kevin Faller said the suspect was arrested in Malden could not provide his name. Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis said the arrest took place at a Russell Street home in his city. Faller said the suspect is being charged with armed robbery while masked. According to Faller, the suspect entered the bank around 2:53 p.m. Wednesday wearing a ski mask and handed a note to the teller that said he had a gun and demanded money. Medford to Implement New 911 Info System

Smart911 program will allow public safety to have specific information about residences in case of emergency.

The City of Medford will be implementing a new 911 information system aimed at better helping public safety personnel responses to emergencies. Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn said at a press conference last week the system will allow individuals to "put together their own profile so when police and fire are responding, they will know the needs of that individual." McGlynn said a similar system had been used in the past but they included forms that needed to be filled out and entered manually. "This process will be much smoother," he said. McGlynn said Medford will be the first city in the state to implement the program from Framingham-based Smart911. New Equipment Coming For Medford Police, Fire

New school security system being also implemented.

Equipment upgrades are on the way for Medford Police and Fire personnel, according to Mayor Michael McGlynn. The city is planning to purchase five new police cruisers for the Medford Police Department and three new command vehicles for the Medford Fire Department, McGlynn said recently. New cruisers will cost the city and initial payment of about $50,000, while the first payment on the new fire command vehicles will cost about $35,000. McGlynn said the fire deparment currently has several command vehicles that are "somewhat aged." McGlynn also added the city is in the process of implementing the new security system for Medford's schools. The system will have streaming video and will be hooked in to the city's 911 center. Boston Police: Three New Bombing Suspects in Custody

Officials stress there is no threat to the public, details still emerging.

Boston Police announced a major new development in the Boston Marathon bombing case Wednesday morning. According to the department, there are three new suspects in custody. Boston Police tweeted the news just after 11 a.m. Wednesday. There were no further details, though the police said they would offer more information soon. I don't think that's very fair to say "well if you don't like it, there's the door" when we're talking about regional stories. You simply can't apply Westford rules to regional stories. I respect that you're trying to do what you think is right by your readers, but when it comes to a regional story, it's way bigger than Westford.   more ›
