Stories about the massive blizzard and police-related posts top the list.
We'll probably best remember February 2013 for the major winter snow storm that blanketed Medford and the surrounding region, dumping two feet of snow and cancelling three days of school. Several of our top stoties this month were related to the storm as a result. Most of Medford Patch's other top-read stories for the month were related to police and/or public safety matters. Three men were charged after a drug warrant was served at a Jerome Street residence; a large office building near Wellington Circle was evacuated due to a phony bomb threat; and police also sought a suspect in a bank robbery on Salem Street. 1. McGlynn said he knows city "wasn't perfect" dealing with the storm but employees did a "very good job."
Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn said two city Department of Public Works trucks were victims of the major winter storm that blanketed two feet of snow on the city. McGlynn said during a Friday press conference he would request to include two new DPW trucks among the items to be funded by a possible $3.2 million interest-free loan from the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority discussed by the City Council this week. McGlynn said one of the trucks, a smaller plow, actually overheated and "burst into flames" due to the stress from pushing "heavy, wet snow." McGlynn said the truck was "a $50,000 item." The other truck that died during the storm was a sander, which was also valued at $50,000. McGlynn is proposing purchasing two larger trucks …

According to Boston.com, the city's snow budget was in rough shape even before this past storm.
Medford's snow removal budget was already in rough shape before the weekend blizzard and now it's running in deficit, according to a Boston.com report published Tuesday. Mayor Michael J. McGlynn told Boston.com snow removal budgets are often underfunded as a means of keeping other items within a budget instead. Also, McGlynn said the state allows municipalities to carry over snow removal budget deficits to the following fiscal year. McGlynn also told Boston.com the city received over 70 complaints from residents Monday over Medford streets that needed plowing and that fewer vehicles were towed from city streets during this storm than others because "people paid attention." Medford residents have been complaining about the plowing during …

Some details on the aftermath of the biggest snowstorm in years.
The snow has stopped, but the work of cleaning up from one of the biggest snowstorms in local history is just getting ramped up. Between Friday and Saturday, Medford saw upwards of two feet of snow. All across the city, people have begun the process of digging out. On Saturday, the city made a reverse 911 call with a message from Medford Mayor Michael J. McGlynn, which said that 108 plows, both city and private contractors, have been working to clear city streets. We heard from a lot of people on Facebook Saturday who were still waiting for their street to be plowed even as the evening approached. Calling the Medford DPW seemed to do the trick for some. There were only two power outages in Medford reported by National Grid as of 8 a.m. …

I was wondering how do they chose who gets a pile of snow left and who gets everything removed? I have some pics... I always clean my sidewalk but so many of them are still not clean yet? That's why …   more ›
