A long-duration storm is knocking on the city's door, but most local meteorologists expect little snow in Boston.
Medford's in for some wet weather Wednesday through Friday, according to local forecasts, but don't get out your snow shovels yet. For Boston, the local weather teams aren't predicting very much snow. Instead, expect a lot of rain and maybe some heavy slushy snow in spots. While areas inland may get a half a foot of snow, Boston's bigger concern is the three high tides during this storm. Flooding may become an issue along the immediate coast. Here are the latest forecasts from the local television news weather teams. All totals were updated Wednesday morning. Blizzard warning goes into effect at 6 a.m.
The National Weather Service is continuing to call the storm expected to hit the region as a "potential historic" one that has been upgraded from a blizzard watch to a blizzard warning. As of 3:19 p.m. on Wednesday, the National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for Middlesex County and much of Massachusetts from Friday morning through Saturday afternoon. According to NWS, much the state will be impacted by heavy snow with accumulation of 12 to 24 inches with the potential for blizzard conditions. The NWS previously forecast 14 to 18 inches in the Medford area. That total has been increased to 18 to 24 inches in the latest forecast. (See photo.) Light snow is expected to begin by Friday morning and increase in intensity throughout the day with the heaviest snowfall occurring Friday night into Saturday morning. One of the biggest snowstorms to ever hit the region happened 35 years ago today.
It has been 35 years since the legendary "Blizzard of '78," one of the biggest and most memorable snowstorms to ever hit Massachusetts. On Feb. 6, 1978, the area was hit with a record 27 inches of snow with the added bonus of hurricane force winds. The storm began the morning of Feb. 6 and lasted through the following evening. The snow came down so fast that thousands of motorists were stranded in snowdrifts as they drove down Rte. 128. Butler St was not plowed from 11pm Fri until 1am SUNDAY - NOT OK!
