Residents, Business Owners Sound Off on Medford Square

Keep the discussion going today.

Medford Patch posted an article last week after the City Council held a discussion about the current state of Medford Square. The article sparked a lenghty discussion amongst readers, residents and a couple of business owners even got into the fray. In all, readers posted a whopping 65 comments on the article. What follows is a sampling of some of the arguments posted on the article about how the square can be improved. Maryellen Conway: It's the lack of parking, not the lack of parking enforcement. If there were available parking and not just behind the stores on Riverside Ave, the cars would not be forced to park over the limit. And where is the long term parking anyway if you're getting your hair cut, having lunch or dinner, buying a …

I somewhat agree with Sommer: I live in West Medford (I hate to get off topic, but I wish we had more variety in the restaurants and shops in this part of Medford). As for Medford Square, 75% of the time I walk or take a bus (which takes effort) to where I want to go-- this is usually Davis Square because there is more to do there (gym, food, coffee, shopping, movies, etc.) I feel like we need …   more ›

Cradock Bridge Reconstruction Design Unveiled

Temporary bridge over Mystic River is part of the plans for major Medford bridge reconstruction.

MassDOT officials and Medford legislative delegation members were on hand Tuesday night to present the Medford City Council new plans for the reconstruction of the Cradock Bridge. The historic bridge is a major one for travel into and out of Medford Square, carrying traffic over the Mystic River on Main Street near the on- and off-ramps to Route 16. A temporary bridge is part of the plans, as part of an effort by engineers to minimize the impact on traffic and local businesses. The temporary bridge would extend from a temporary Route 16 off-ramp, over the river to Clippership Drive, with access to Riverside Avenue for vehicles turning left. Two southbound lanes of Main Street on the Cradock Bridge will be maintained during construction …

How Can Medford Square Be Improved?

City Council discussion Tuesday focused on a number of factors.

What started out as a Medford City Council discussion about the Cradock Bridge reconstruction Tuesday turned into a debate about issues surrounding Medford Square. The council will receive a presentation from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation next week on the planned 2014 reconstruction of the historic Medford Square bridge. "This is going to have major, major impact on Medford Square, on the traffic and the business community," said Council President Bob Maiocco. Council Vice President Fred Dello Russo, Jr. said the bridge project is going to require "a lot of support from the government and the citizens to continue to patronize all the businesses in the square." He cited a recent dinner out in a neighboring community, one he…

Jane, I totally agree! ESPECIALLY with good outdoor seating! If I were to build on your wishlist, I would add (1) a good toy store with educational/high quality toys and games (2) a specialty imports foods store (think Dave's fresh pasta) and (3) ANYTHING with river views! Right now, Bestsellers is the only place that really takes advantage of their riverside location.... MORE river access, …   more ›
