"I expect it will be a crowded primary," State Rep. Carl Sciortino said about a possible race to fill Ed Markey's seat in Congress, should Markey be elected to the U.S. Senate.
State Rep. Carl Sciortino, who represents parts of Medford and Somerville in the state legislature, spoke to Joe Lynch on "Greater Somerville" this week about his run for Congress. As the two discuss on the show, Sciortino has jumped into the race to represent the 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, even though that seat, at the moment, is occupied by Ed Markey. However, with Markey running for Senate in this spring's special election, and with recent polls suggesting Markey's the favorite to win, candidates, including Sciortino, are lining up to fill his seat in Washington. Massachusetts Rep. Carl Sciortino (D) of Medford announced Friday he is a candidate for the state's 5th U.S. Congressional District. Malden's Edward Markey (D) has held the seat since first being elected in 1976 but he's now running to replace U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in the U.S. Senate. “I am running to continue the strong progressive leadership that the families of the Fifth District have always counted on,” said Sciortino in a statement Friday. “I look forward to bringing my record of accomplishment to Washington to fight for our progressive values.” Sciortino has served in the legislature since 2004 after being elected at the age of 25. Beyond local aid, the city could lose funding from the state for special education, homeless student aid and charter school reimbursements in the half-billion proposal Gov. Deval Patrick released Tuesday.
Medford could lose between $204,000 and $229,000 in aid from state government, Mayor Michael McGlynn said, as part of the half-billion worth of cuts that Gov. Deval Patrick proposed on Tuesday, in anticipation of the "fiscal cliff" combined with projected state tax revenues that are more than $500,000 lower than previously expected. "The uncertainty of the fiscal cliff and the resulting slow down in growth, is the direct cause of our budget challenges," Patrick said. The Democrat defeated Medford Republican David Rajczewski in the 34th Middlesex District.
Incumbent State Rep. Carl Sciortino, a Democrat, defeated Republican David Rajczewski in the 34th Middlesex District. With all precincts reporting in Somerville and Medford, Sciortoni received 13,731 votes and Rajczewski received 2,578. Sciortino will return to the Massachusetts House of Representatives for his fifth term. He represents West Somerville, Winter Hill in Somerville and the southern part of Medford.

State Rep. Carl Sciortino, who's running for reelection in the 34th Middlesex District, spoke to Patch about his legislative priorities and campaign.
Democrat State Rep. Carl Sciortino, who was first elected in 2004 to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, represents a diverse district that straddles Somerville and Medford. His district includes West Somerville's Ward 7 and most of Winter Hill's Ward 4. (Under redistricting he'll represent all of Ward 4.) In Medford, he represents wards 4 and 5 and parts of Ward 7 and 8, in the southern part of the city. This year, Sciortino did not face a challenge in the primaries, and he'll be running against Republican David Rajczewski in the general election. Sciortino said he is "confident" he'll win the election, and noted he's been attending gatherings across the district as he campaigns. Patch spoke with Sciortino recently to talk about …
