Scott Brown Will Not Run for U.S. Senate
Who do you think should be the Republican candidate?
Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State. Two Democratic political opponents—Congressman Stephen Lynch of South Boston and Congressman Edward Markey of Malden—will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25. There are currently no Republican candidates in the race. Markey, who represents the 5th Congressional District, kicked off his campaign in December. Lynch Announces U.S. Senate Run on Facebook

While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later this afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page popped up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Earlier in the morning, the Stephen Lynch for Congress Facebook page had posted a message directing people to the newly created Senate page for news “on today’s plans and schedule.” Lynch is expected to make an announcement at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall in South Boston. John Kerry Confirmed As Secretary of State
Kerry will replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.
With only three dissenting votes, the U.S. Senate has confirmed John Kerry as the new Secretary of State. Kerry will take over for Hillary Clinton, who is leaving her post after four years. The move means Kerry will have to resign as a senator soon paving the way for a special senate election. The primary election is scheduled for April 30 and the general election will be held on June 25. U.S. Congressman Ed Markey, D-MA, who represents Medford, has announced he is running for the seat. U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA has hinted that he may run. As for an interim senator for Kerry's seat, Gov. Deval Patrick plans to announce his pick on Wednesday, Jan. 30, according to the Boston Herald.

Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday calling for a new assault weapons ban and improved background checks, among other measures.
Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to the vice president Wednesday with proposed recommendations for his task force on guns. In the letter (attached), the Malden Democrat asks Joe Biden to consider recommending “a new assault weapons ban that includes all semi-automatic weapons capable of accommodating an ammunition magazine greater than 10 rounds.” He also asks the vice president to consider “a ban on ‘drums’ or ‘magazines’ of ammunition that can carry more than 10 bullets, which were used to deadly effect in both the Newtown and Aurora kilings.” “These are weapons designed for war – not for hunting or protecting one’s home – and have no purpose except to kill as many people as possible without the need to reload,” Markey wrote. Another Massachusetts Congressman is seriously considering a run for Sen. John Kerry’s seat in a special election this year. The U.S. House of Representatives approved a deal late Tuesday to ease portions of the so-called "fiscal cliff," according to the Huffington Post. How did our local representatives in Congress vote? Rep. Ed Markey, D-Malden, Rep. John Tierney, D-Salem, and Rep. Mike Capuano, D-Somerville, each supported the measure. The compromise was approved by the Senate at 2 a.m. Tuesday, and despite talk of rejecting it, the House ultimately passed the bill by a vote of 257 to 167. Sens.
